How to Get Rid of and Stop Spam Junk Mail

Alicia Bodine
Email accounts are almost necessary nowadays to stay in touch with family and friends. They are used for business purposes, and for keeping up to date with your favorite stores sales. Once you open your first email account, it doesn't take long before you begin receiving spam messages. Spam messages are messages that are sent to you without your permission. You can delete them easily, but once a company has your email address, they will keep emailing you until you stop them.

Follow these steps to get rid of your spam mail:

Step 1:
Go through your inbox folder. If there are any Spam messages in there, click "Report Spam." If a number of others do the same thing, the email address will be deleted by the company that authorized it. Then that address will no longer be able to send you messages.

Step 2:
Go to your Spam folder. You can click all of the messages and delete them without even opening them. This will only take a few seconds. This method will get rid of the messages that were sent to you, but it won't stop them from sending more.

Step 3:
Open up the Spam email and scroll to the bottom. Look for an "opt out" link. Many emails will have this. Click on that link, and follow the directions on the page that pops up. Sometimes it will ask you to write the email address you want to opt out with, and sometimes it will just ask you to click submit. Once you do this, the company will remove your email address from their list so you won't get anymore Spam mail from them.

Step 4:
Look for a mailing address. Some Spam mails will make it more difficult for you to stop receiving their messages. They will post an address for you to mail a letter to at the end of the email. They think you won't take the time to write the letter, but you should. Write the letter and pay the postage. This will get the company to stop all future Spam messages.

Step 5:
View the entire email address of the person who sent you the Spam message. Copy and highlight the second part of the email (after the @ symbol). So if the message was from henry@yahoo.com, you would highlight yahoo.com. Then go over to your search engine and type in contact yahoo.com. Some links would pop up to give you contact information for Yahoo. Then email yahoo with the email address of the person sending you the Spam. This is the only option you have if there is no opt out link or address.

Step 6:
Make sure you don't visit any untrustworthy sites or give your email address out to any companies that sell your information. This will keep you from getting any new Spam messages.

Tips:
Spend 10 minutes each week fighting your Spam messages and you will keep it under control.

You may want to go with a gmail account because they are very good at separating Spam from legitimate emails.

Warnings:
Never click on a link inside of a Spam message except for the opt out link. You could potentially be giving the person on the other end some of your personal information which they will use in a bad way.
