How to Ride a Unicycle Bicycle

Rashel Dan
A unicycle bicycle is somewhat similar to a bicycle only it has a single tire, a shaft surrounding the axle and seat for the rider, and a set of off-setting pedals. Most unicycle seats are padded. Like most standard bicycles, it has a banana curve seat. Because it only has one tire, it is rather difficult to ride especially if one is used to riding a bicycle.

However, some do learn to ride a unicycle at once, while others still take a few months to master riding it. There are tips to keep in mind in order to assist you in riding a unicycle. The first thing to do is to choose a handrail whose height you find comfortable with. Find a concrete spot where you can practice riding. Grassy places are rather bumpy. Hold the rail with your two hands while riding, and then gradually remove one hand. When you are at your level of comfort, holding unto the rail while riding, let go. Practice makes perfect. Practice until you become comfortable riding the unicycle without holding the rail. Practice longer distances. Remember to keep your weight on the seat to avoid wobbling or moving from side to side. Your pedaling must be even and look forward when you do so.

Take note that protective pads must be worn at all times during practice. The key to unicycling is balancing your weight on the seat forward and backward, as well as to the sides. The weight of the body must be set further forward that what is normally done. The unicycle must be under the rider, rather than on top of him. Leaning and pedaling forward bring the pedal under you. Most riders fall off the unicycle at the front because there is not enough pedaling and they might not be leaning forward. If a rider falls back, then he must have been leaning too far back or he was pedaling too fast. If you fall off the side, you are clearly not leaning anything at all!

Practice standing up with all your weight while riding and then stand up once in a while as you ride. It is important to have more leg room during pedaling. Wear bike shorts. You also need to change the saddle's angle so that it is higher in the front. Consider also lowering the seat post by a few centimeter. Drifting to the left or right while you are riding may be due to a crooked saddle. Therefore, make sure that the saddle is straight. Perhaps, drifting is caused by bad posture. So, sit up straight. A slanted road also results to drifting. A crown in the center and a slight slope to the shoulder are signs of a slanted road. In order to check a drift, keep your back straight and keep your hands at the sides or behind the back. Riding in figure eights will keep the riding smooth. To save you from saddle soreness, try to lower the saddle and see if it helps.
