How to Be Romantic Without Spending Any Money

Kyra Lennon
Contrary to popular belief, being romantic doesn't require lots of expensive gestures. Sure, a dozen red roses every day and dining at the finest restaurants would be nice, but romance is about much more than money. In fact, most of the time it's the little things that mean the most. If you are a bit short on cash, romance doesn't have to be forgotten. With a little imagination and creativity, you can show your love for your partner without spending a single penny.

Take a moonlight stroll

Whether at home or away, moonlight walks are one of the most romantic things you can do with your partner. When there are fewer people around, you will get to experience the peace and tranquility of the night and just enjoy being in each other's company. There is extra magic to be found if you can take a moonlight walk on the beach. Seeing the moon reflecting on the water is a beautiful sight and will help to give you that loved up feeling.

Bake together

You might think the idea of donning an apron won't appeal to your man, but baking doesn't have to be a girly activity. Spend some time looking through recipe books to find something you will both enjoy. Most cakes can easily be made from basic ingredients people usually have in their cupboards so there is no need for extra expense. If your partner still isn't tempted by the idea of sweet treats, remind him just how much fun you can have in the kitchen with all that squirty cream!

Make a CD

This idea is one which dates back to the 80s, when the "mix tape" was extremely popular. The updated version - while undoubtedly cheesy - is a romantic thing to make for your partner which doesn't cost a thing. Most people have recordable CDs in the house for backing up computer files. Simply take one and fill it with songs that are special to you both. You could present it as is, or even in homemade wrapping paper if you are feeling extra creative. Homemade mix CDs will remind you of the many good times you have had, so listen together and enjoy reminiscing.

Listen

It's true that you should take time out of every day to talk and listen to your partner. But it can also be a romantic activity if you take the time to discuss things which are important to you. It could be your ambitions or your dreams and hopes for the future. It could even be a more intimate conversation about fantasies. My boyfriend and I often take some time out to just talk and listen to each other and if you set the mood just right, it can be really worthwhile.

Other free romantic ideas you could use are, taking a bubble bath together, leaving love notes for each other or even just snuggling up to watch a movie. Romance is a very simple thing to create and quite often requires no money at all!

A romantic stroll works for us, or watching a good movie together, with a bottle of wine and some popcorn maybe. A bubble bath for 2 sounds good, but have you seen the size of most baths these days! I like the idea of preparing a meal or cooking together too, then maybe watching a movie, or a candlelight dinner. Got my anniversary coming up, might have to think of something.

I agree with Sophia! Some of the best times we have had involved little or no money at all. Fishing was a big one two summers ago!

Thanks for the great tips! Some of the most fun times I have had with my husband involved making tacos from scratch because there were many steps I'd chop vegetables and make pico de gallo, he'd prepare the meat and tortilla shells. That fun time in the kitchen can be great. Going swimming can be really fun too or picking wild flowers. Thanks for the inspiration from your article.
