How to Make a Rotating Birdcage Wedding Cake Topper

Pam Parent
A rotating birdcage cake topper will add drama and elegance to your wedding cake. The mini birdcage you use for the wedding cake topper can be decorated and filled to adapt to most wedding themes. I have put a small bride and groom inside the birdcage for a more traditional look, or you could put a picture of the bride of groom inside. The most important thing to remember is to use lightweight items for the inside of the birdcage. This will help to ensure the continuous rotation of the birdcage.

Rotating Birdcage Cake Topper

Supplies:

Rotating display with switch on the side (approximately 4 1/2 to 5 inches)
Mini birdcage
White spray paint
Scissors
1/2 yard of extra wide white gathered lace
Glue gun and glue sticks
Mini bride and groom figurine
2 mini white faux doves
1/2 yard of 1/2 inch white satin ribbon
4 mini silk rosebuds

Directions:

1. In a well ventilated room, spray paint the birdcage white. Let dry. Repeat this step. Depending on the material the birdcage is made from, you may need up to three coats of paint to completely cover the birdcage.

2. Glue the wide gathered lace around the disc that will be rotating the birdcage. This will beautifully help to conceal the rotating display and switch, while still giving easy access to turning the rotating display on or off.

3. Make a bow from the satin ribbon. Glue the bow to the top of the birdcage. Glue both white doves to the top, center of the bow. Glue silk roses around the doves at the top of the birdcage.

4. Place the bride and groom figurine inside the birdcage. To keep the figurine in place, I put a little glue on the bottom before placing the figurine inside the birdcage. Instead of placing a bride and groom inside the birdcage, you could put seashells, flowers, or hang faux wedding rings from the inside of the birdcage. These are all variations that I have used, and all choices look stunning.

5. I found it is best to wait until the cake has been delivered and setup before I place the rotating birdcage topper on the wedding cake. Once it is setup, carefully place the rotating display centered on top of the wedding cake. Carefully place the birdcage on the rotating display. Have someone turn the rotating birdcage cake topper on before the guest arrive. As the guest enter the reception hall, they will be mesmerized by such a unique, stunning wedding cake topper. Choosing this style of cake topper truly makes it a one-of-a-kind wedding cake.

National Artcraft is the best place to get mini rotating displays needed for this wedding project.. Comfort and Joys offers mini birdcages for $9.
