You will start by preheating your over to 350 degrees. You will then mix up both of the cake mixes following the directions on the package. You will then need to prepare your cake pan. Make sure you generously spray the pan with the non-stick cooking spray. This will prevent the cake from sticking to the pan when you take it out of the pan. You will then need to pour the cake batter into the pan until it is ¾ of the way full. You might have remaining batter. If you do I suggest making cupcakes or a smaller cake with it. You will then need to bake the cake in the preheated oven. After you start smelling the cake you will need to check on it. You can make sure it is done by inserting a clean toothpick into the center of the cake. If you pull the toothpick out and it is clean, the cake is done. If it has wet batter on it when you pull it out it needs to bake longer.
When the cake is done pull it out of the oven and let it cool in the pan for fifteen minutes. You will then need to flip the cake out onto your cake board. Allow the cake to cool at least another three hours. The cake must be completely cool when you decorate it or the frosting will melt and run. After the cake is cool, you are ready to start trimming the cake. Please use the pattern to make the cuts. You will need to form the duck out of the cake. If you follow the pattern you can easily do so, without making the wrong cuts. After the cake is trimmed to shape the duck you can then decorate the cake.
You will need to tint approximately one and a half of the tubs of frosting yellow. You should put the frosting in a bowl to do so and add yellow food coloring until you get the desired color. The other half of one of the tubs should be tinted orange. Add a few drops of red and yellow food coloring and then adjust as needed drop by drop. The remaining tub will only have a little used out of it. You will need to leave some of it white, enough for the eye. You will also need some of it tinted black to outline the wing beak and part of the eye. First you will want to frost the whole cake yellow. You can even frost the beak yellow. After the cake is frosted yellow you can now frost the beak orange. You will also need to make the eye, and outline the wing.
This is not a very difficult cake to make, but you must use the pattern. You can actually make this in a bigger cake pan if you like, so the duck will turn out bigger. Have fun with it and your child will love this easy to make cake. For more cake ideas please visit my other articles here.
