How to Run Your Freelance Writing Career like a Business

Michelle Knudson
There is a difference between a professional freelance writing firm and a hobby writer. The most important factor in running your freelance writing career like a business is one keyword profit. Here are four tips to help you along the way.

Set Schedule

You want people to know that they can reach you each day. Schedule hours dedicated to your freelance writing career each day. You want clients to know that you are available for any questions or change requests that he or she may have. The schedule will help you stay on track. It will also give people a better impression of you when you have a set schedule. People want to know that they can rely on you.

Quality

Do not publish any work that is poor quality. It is better to ask for an extension than it is to turn in poor quality work. You always want to turn in the best quality of work as much as possible. You need to make sure to run it through a spelling and grammar check before you turn in the article too. You may want to have an editor or some other freelance writer look at it before you turn in the final draft to check for any errors.

Recommendations

People that recommend other people to you know that you are a professional in the field. It goes in your favor when people start to recommend others to you since it implies that they like the quality of work. Recommendations from prior or current clients are a very good indication that you are doing something right with your writing skills.

Affordable Prices

You want to have affordable prices. You need to charge more money for commercial work than you do for individual clients. The major companies can afford to pay you more. Companies usually require more work from you than an individual client does in most cases in freelance writing industry. Make it easy for them to pay you by accepting all credit cards, checks, and money orders. Make sure to get 50% upfront on big projects in order to make sure that you get paid some of the money just in case the client is flaky.

You definitely need a website and a business card. It will show people that you are serious about freelance writing when you invest money into a website and business cards. The business cards need to look professional.
