This first things to help any runner are comfortable clothing and shoes. Wear layers of clothing if it's cool out so you can peel them off as your body temperature increases. Make sure to wear cotton shirts to help circulate air and pull moisture off of you body. If you have a little money to spend I suggest investing in moisture wicking clothing. They make shirts, shorts and socks. These articles of clothing pull moisture off of your body and allow air in keeping you cool and dry. Make sure you have comfortable, padded socks to support your feet. Shoes are the most important part of your running attire. Shoes, like tires, have a "mileage." Make sure to replace your running shoes about every six months as the treads and cushions get worn down in that time. Make sure your shoes fit well and use inserts like the Dr Scholl's brand. Some high end shoe stores actually have a computer system that records your foot when running and will design a shoe based on your foot and how you run. If you have the money for it these are great options.
Music is a great entertainment and distraction factor when running or walking. It's easy to burn a CD from your computer for a personal Walkman. If you have an IPod, you can download songs onto it and use it during your run. Some great favorites of mine are "Eye of The Tiger" from the Rocky movie, "Fly Away" by Lenny Kravitz, "Ready to Go" by Republica and "Sandstorm" by Darude. Any songs by The Black Eyed Peas or OutKast make a great addition.
Sometimes a constant companion is enough to make our run more enjoyable. I like to leash my dog up and take her with me. Knowing both the dog and I are getting our daily exercise in keeps me motivated. Sometimes I load my daughter up in her stroller and she keeps me running because she naps so well when she's being pushed around. Having a friend to join you a couple days a week is a great way to stay motivated. Make sure to pick someone on the same level as yourself. You're more likely to give up if your not challenged enough or too much.
Scenery is a great motivation when running. If you prefer to run on a treadmill, many gyms today have televisions turned to local stations that you can watch. If you must watch "The Ellen DeGenerous Show" everyday, it would be easy to get a run in while watching it. If outdoors is more your style, pick somewhere that will keep your interest. Look into local parks or trails in your area. A run on the beach is also very challenging and a great sight at the same time.

Post a CommentDarude's "Sandstorm" is one of the greatest songs to get me moving, be it running or dancing! Great tips to get us all moving around more. :)
I use all the same tips, including the dog...well not the stroller. My son is 7 now. I support your list of tips. They work!
I recommend music that is upbeat. For me, running also is 'me-time', where I can relax and think while my dog tugs me along the C&O canal. ;-)
Music is a good idea. I sometimes see runners listening to music as they jog along.
