How Safe Are Digital Baby Monitors?

Elena Newell
In these days of digital technology it is hard to avoid anything digital. Moreover the far superior performance of digital over analogue equipment has made them more popular. So is the case for baby monitors that have also gone digital and are becoming increasingly popular. However digital appliances come with a rider, they emit electromagnetic waves which can cause health hazards from continuous exposure. Therefore the question that is uppermost in most parent's mind is; how safe are digital baby monitors?

This fear is natural because as we all know babies are more prone to all types of health hazards and parents need to constantly monitor what the baby is exposed to. Most of us have heard that constant exposure to strong electromagnetic waves has been known to affect the person's nervous system. Therefore it is natural to be concerned when it comes to babies being exposed to electromagnetic radiations from digital baby monitors. To better understand the situation we must first know what electro-smog is and what its effects are.

Electro-smog is the name given to the electromagnetic radiation that is created and persists in the area where electronic gadgets like TVs, microwaves, cordless phones, mobile phones, digital baby monitors etc are operating. Studies conducted over the years have shown that continuous exposure to electro-smog over a period of time affects the body's nervous system resulting in symptoms like chronic fatigue, disruptive sleep patterns, headaches and abnormal patterns of behavior in young children. Therefore it is important for parents to learn about the affects of digital baby monitor on the babies to allay their fears in this regard.

It is claimed by the reputed baby monitor manufacturers that the digital baby monitors manufactured by them are quite safe for babies as the radiation produced by them is of very low intensity. For example it is claimed by Phillips, which also manufactures these type of monitors, that their digital baby monitors emit electro-smog levels that are ten thousand times lower than the internationally accepted safe levels for electro-smog. However to be on the safer side they recommend that the monitors should be kept away from the sleeping baby at a distance of at least one meter. This information should bring some solace to the concerned parents.

It is difficult to completely avoid digital baby monitors as they have proven to be more efficient and have better reception than their older analogue versions. Also with proper precautions digital baby monitors can be safely used for babies. In addition to keeping the monitor at least one meter away from the sleeping child you should avoid placing a lot of appliances such as computers, television sets, cordless, etc. in the baby's room. Or at least you should switch them off while the baby is sleeping in that room. With these precautions in place you can safely use digital baby monitors.
