To examine this, first understand that many rides in theme parks are running almost nonstop all day long. Things naturally wear out after prolonged use. While it is true that parks hire maintenance crews to keep things running, there is another factor here.
Theme Parks, like any other business are there to make their owners money. When a ride is down for maintenance, it is literally costing the owners money not only in the cost of repairs, but also in lost revenue. It is a fact that many maintenance personnel are forced to make quick repairs, in order to get the ride up and running again. When you work in a hurry, mistakes are bound to happen. Unfortunately, many mistakes often result in someone getting hurt or even killed.
Just because you go to an Amusement Park, do not assume that the rides are 100% safe. It is your life you are trusting to this ride. Before you get on, ask yourself what you would do if something were to happen. Make yourself an escape plan just in case.
On the other hand, it is not always the parks who cause the accidents. Many injuries and deaths are caused by the tourists who are acting improperly on the ride. I remember hearing about one young man who was on a roller coaster and decided to stand up in the car while the coaster was at the top of a climb. He did not see the bar across the top of the hill and as the coaster started down, the bar literally cut off this mans head.
So how safe are theme parks? Millions of people enjoy them every day without incident. Just remember that the majority of the risk you take is up to you. Think before you strap yourself in to go 100 miles an hour in a ride that has had many trips before you!
