There are times we must travel alone and there are times we choose to travel alone. In either case, we must take special precautions to be safe. Let's look at a few ways to keep you safe when traveling alone.
I would start with the vehicle. Have oil changed, tire pressure checked, brake fluid checked and so on. You want your vehicle in top notch shape on the road. This isn't to say something could go wrong later, but the likelihood of that is less likely if you have done a thorough check on your vehicle. You may also want to think about joining AAA. For more information on AAA check out their website at www.aaa.com
Next I would suggest to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Be cautious of where you stop to get gas. Overlook the run down gas stations with hardly anyone there and opt for the well lit busy gas station down the road. Park closest to the entry when getting gas. Lock your vehicle if you have to go in. Have keys in hand upon returning. I would also suggest to make sure you keep plenty of gas in the tank.
Another suggestion is to carry money on you rather than in your purse. The likelihood that you will get robbed is very slim I am sure, but the possibility is always there. I would keep your cell phone and money on you in case your purse does get stolen. One quick tip: keep cell phone charged at full capacity at all times.
Next plan your trip well. Make sure you allow yourself plenty of time if you have to arrive somewhere at a particular time. Make sure you have enough money to cover known and unknown expenses. Be prepared.
When walking to and from your car or just walking in a store keep your head up and look people in the eyes. This gives you a sense of confidence and more than likely the fellow looking for a victim will pass you up. If you do ever find yourself in that situation where you are being assaulted there are two key things. One to do and one not to do. DO scream! I suggest to scream FIRE! People are inclined to pay more attention when they hear "fire" than just "help". The second thing to NOT do. NEVER be taken to a second location. Do whatever you have to do, but do not allow them to take you anywhere. Usually the crime happens at that second location. Keep these two tips in your mind. Hopefully you will never have to use them, but they are good to know and have with you.
Next, have fun! You can be safe and aware and still have fun. Enjoy this time alone. You can stop when you want. Eat what you want. Blare the radio if you want. You have the freedom to stop at every historical marker if you wish. You don't have to live in the fear the next time you travel alone.
