How to Safely Deep-Fry a Trukey

Paul Jones
There are many things that make cooking turkey in a deep-frier dangerous.

For Example

1 - Deep Friers are very easy to tip which causes the extremely hot oils to spill.

2 - Users overfill the fryer and when the turkey is places in the frier the oils overflow causing burns.

3 - The Liquids from partially frozens turkeys melt which would also cause the fryer to overflow,

4 - The handle of deep-friers can become very hot while cooking, and may cause burns while removing.

Althought with all these reasons that make deep-friers dangerous, it is completely up to the user whether or not to attempt this tedious task. If you are plannign on trying you should follow these guide lines.

1 - Make sure that before using the deep-frier you carefully read all of the precautions, and cooking instructions.

2 - Don't fill the frier to the maximum fill line, it may cause the oils to overflow.

3 - Don't overheat the oils, it may cause them to combust; some deep friers don't include a thermometer so it is essential that you buy an accurate thermometer.

4 - In order to prevent the frier from tipping over and spilling, you must make sure that your frier is on flat ground and has a stable base.

5 - Before lowering the turkey into the frier first make sure that it is completely thawed, and all moisture is wiped off, excess liquids could cause unnecessary oil splatters.

5 - Lower the raw turkey slowly into the hot oil, for added help and safety you may want to have a friend help.

6. Once the turkey is in the frier don't try to touch it. Use pot-holders at all times, while handling the frier.

7 . Do not use the frier indoors. You also shouldn't set the frier up on wood structures such as decks.

In addition to all of these tips the user should also keep a fire extinguisher on hand at all times. Never Use Water To Extinguish A Fire In The Frier! Pouring water in the frier to overflow and could combust the oils. (trust me I watched the mythbusters)

Children and pets should not be permitted to go near the frier while the cooking is in progress. The oils will remain hot for a long time after cooking so wait before disposing of them.

Good Luck cooking, and Happy Thanksgiving!
