How to Safely Play Your Nintendo Wii

Marsha J
No game system has been as dangerous as the Nintendo Wii. None that is, unless you count the crazy people that come out at the next release of a Playstation. A website was created at the release of the Wii because almost from the beginning people were becoming injured because they could not do something as simple as reading the instructions that came with the gaming system.

The website that was created is called Wiihaveaproblem.com and it focuses on stories and pictures that people send in when damage and/or injuries are caused when playing the Wii. The most common injuries are usually someone losing their grip on the Wii mote and tossing it into the television set. Another common problem is injuries caused to the person that is playing the Wii or an innocent bystander who just happened to be standing to close to lunatic playing Wii tennis.

To safely play the Nintendo Wii, players should take a look around the area that houses the Wii game system. If furniture such as sofas, couches and tables are too close, move them farther back. Be sure that the entire area around the system is free and clear. Also be sure that there are no bulbs or low ceiling fans with bulbs around or close to the area because tall players can and will get injured.

Next take a look at the floor and make sure that the surface is smooth but not slippery. Move any of your child's toys, books and anything else off of the floor close to where the games will be played. The Wii mote does not have a cord and this allows for a lot of movement. If there are objects around a person's foot, someone could get seriously hurt.

Before starting the game, carefully check the wrist band of the Wii mote to make sure that it is not fragmented or torn. Wipe your hands and check that they are not sweaty or that they do not have on lotion or any kind of grease. Those things could cause you to lose control of the Wii mote. Always put the wrist strap on your wrist before playing. This is an added security if the Wii mote should ever fly out of your hand during game play.

When the game starts use easy motions to play the games. Although it may seem like it, you are not actually in the game and while the characters move like you do, there is no need to have frantic and wild arm or body movements because they also can cause lose of control with the Wii mote.

So far there have been a number of damage and complaints about the Wii mote having a thin and cheap wrist ban on the controllers. Not long after the Wii was released Nintendo quickly began to send people who registered or requested it, a thicker band for the controller. Some found however, that the band still was not good enough and during game play the straps would still break as the Wii mote flew out of their hands.

So far checking the Wiihaveaproblem website there has been a twisted knee, a badly sprained ankle, a woman who may have been hit in the eye, which resulted from a very grotesque black eye (I say may because some people believe the husband may have given her the black eye without the help of the Wii mote) and there has also been a lot of damage to televisions, light bulbs and any and everything that is breakable in a house. Use the Wii mote carefully and even more, use some common sense.

  • Give yourself plenty of room to use the wii mote.
  • Move toys and objects out of way and off the floor to avoid falling.
  • Wipe sweaty hands and use the wrist strap to prevent the Wii mote leaving your hands.
There has been rumblings of a class action lawsuit from some of the people who claim injuries from the Wii and the Wii mote.
