How to Use Salt and Ice Mixture to Freeze Your Drinks Quickly

Jitu
Recently I went to Key West with my family for a complete vacation. At this time of the year Key West is always hot and often the average temperature is more than 90 degree F. I got to know one interesting fact also during my vacation at Key West that the lowest temperature at Key West ever recorded was 41 degree F in 1981. At evening when we were coming back to our hotel I bought packs of sodas. But the soda cans were not really cold at all. I didn't have any other choice that time except taking those cans which were at room temperature.

After coming back to hotel I was thinking how to make those drinks cold enough to drink. I called one hotel representative and asked if he has any idea. We had refrigerator in our hotel room. Per his advice I put few soda cans in a plastic bowl and put some ice within the bowl to cover up the cans and then added few tablespoon of salt. I kept the mixture inside the freezer for about 10 minutes. It took 10 minutes to take my bath. When I came back and opened the refrigerator I just got surprised! I found few ice cubes inside the can. Within just 10 minutes the cans liquid became so cold that it started forming ice inside. I was very happy to know the new method of making the drinks cold if we have literally no time at all to make those drinks cool. This is very good idea on how to make your drinks cool within few minutes.

You might have seen putting salt on roadside ice during winter in order to melt the ice. The melting point of ice or the freezing point of water is 32 degree F or 0 degree C. If you add salt in ice the melting point comes down drastically to 20 degree F (or about minus 6 degree C). So still at 20 degree F water can not turn into ice. In other way, 20 degree F temperature is just not enough for ice to retain its form of solid. It starts melting. This helps us to make the ice melt at roadside. This will generally work if the surrounding temperature is more than 20 degree F. Now, what will happen if the surrounding temperature is less than 20 degree F? In that case ice won't melt but the temperature of total mixture will fall down drastically. So you will get mixture with even less temperature which will in terms helps water or water vapor to form ice quickly. In physics this mixture called 'Freezing Mixture'. That is the reason why it helped me to freeze my drinks so rapidly.

This again helps to freeze the fish too. Generally fisher men keep their fish inside a refrigerator which is filled with ice and salt. This helps them to generate even less temperature and thus preserving the fish in good condition at lower temperature. You can use this method to freeze your fish at home if you want to keep them for little longer days.

  • Use salt with ice to get even lower temperature
  • Salt is used to melt ice at roadside during winter
  • Salt and ice mixture is called 'Freezing Mixture'
Salt in ice helps to lower the melting point of ice and freezing point of water. In salt & ice mixture the melting point becomes 20 degree F, whereas the usual melting point of ice is 32 degree F.

Wait until my patio dinner-I'm going to fix a big bowl with the ice and salt, and sit the wine and beer in it!

Very interesting! I'm going to have to give that a try!
