How to Save on Car Rentals

Linda M. McCloud

It doesn't matter if you are renting a car for a vacation or while your regular car is in the shop getting repaired, the bottom line is that you want and need to save money. Luckily, the savvy consumer knows that there are ways to save money on everything, including car renting. Here are a few tips to help you get started.

Skip The Airport Rentals

Yes, renting a car at an airport is fast and easy. Yet, by now you probably know that fast and easy equals more expensive. In fact, if you do the math, you may discover that renting a car at the airport may cost you double. What you can do is check to see if the hotel you are staying offers free hotel shuttle to and from the airport. If it does, take advantage of this perk and rent your car from a nearby rental place. If it doesn't offer this perk, just call a taxi.

Don't Be Too Shy To Look For Discounts

Look for discounts. You may qualify for many of these discounts. These may include: being a AAA member, being a senior citizen, being part of certain corporation or union, or being a member of AARP.

Don't Purchase The Full Insurance Package

Yes, some insurance may be necessary. However, your own car insurance may cover the rental car, partly. If you don't know, call your agent to find out before you purchase any insurance package. You should also always pay for the insurance by credit card. This may automatically give you extra collision coverage. All you have to do is call the credit card company to find out if they cover this extra benefit.

Frequent Renters May Want To Join Zipcar

If you are a frequent traveler to the same city and frequently rent cars, you should join Zipcar. This is a membership that can help save you money. The cost is $60 a year. Then you are allowed to rent cars for the day or the hour. This price will include your cost of insurance and gas. Over time, this can save you a lot of money. Zipcar is currently available in fifty cities across the country.

Yes, there are ways we can save on everything, including car rental prices. The key is to use our brains and not just think about luxury.
