The first thing you want to do for a cat is to make sure that he is choking. Sometimes cats can just be coughing. Cats are also known for coughing up hairballs and this could be a reason why your cat is coughing. Here is how you can tell if your cat is choking. If a cat is making a constant attempt to gag or vomit, If the cat is gasping for air, or if there is blue discoloration of the tongue or gums, these are usual signs that a cat is choking.
Procedure For Chocking Cat
The First thing you want to do is remove the cats collar from around its neck. Check the cat for airflow from nostril to mouth using a mirror. If the cat will let you, try to open its mouth and remove the object. If the cat resist don't proceed with this. If this does not work you will have to resort to using the Heimlich on your cat. There are some risk to performing this procedure on a cat such as broken ribs, injury to internal organs and even death. What you want to do is give your cat a bear hug holding it against your waist with its back to your stomach. Place a fist just behind the ribs. You can feel the rib when you run your hand down the cats abdomen area. What you want to do now is compress the abdomen three to five times with quick pushes. Make sure you check to see if the object is still there. If the object is still there , you should administer sharp blows between the shoulder blades.
You should make sure that there are no small objects around that your cat can choke on. Even though it is very cute when they play, yarn can be on of the things that cats tend to choke on. Keep an out for certain items such as these. If all else fails, you should call your Vet.
