I have always been careful with money. I am not a miser by any means or standards. Yet, I do believe in being careful with money. The idea is to have enough and more, for a rainy day. I spend what I have in my pocket, never more!
You don't have to do too much to save on groceries. But if you follow these simple steps, I assure you that you will be saving hundreds of dollars each year. To save on groceries you can do two things- pay less money; buy less. Buy less might seem a little absurd. But let's get down to the details.

- When I say buy less, I actually mean-when it comes to groceries with low shelf life, buy smaller quantities.Try not to buy too many disposable products. Don't buy gallons of milk or too much ice-cream, unless you have a large family. Since dairy products can spoil easily, why buy and let the products grow old? A simple way to save on groceries and not get sick! Similarly, consider disposable items like razors. Don't buy those huge packets of multiple razors. Instead, buy ones with replaceable blades or spend on an electric one. You will be saving money in the long run.

-To save on groceries, buy when items are on sales. It is also good to use coupons. But use coupons to buy things that you would normally buy. Don't buy things you don't need, just because you have coupons.

- Don't waste food! This might sound silly, but most of us cook more than the quantity we need. We then sometimes use the leftovers, else we trash it. Stop wasting food to save on groceries.

- When you go shopping, go with a grocery list that has the items listed on it, plus the number/quantity against each item. Also, carry the coupon organizer with you. Make grocery shopping a weekly affair and stock up for 1 week.

- Buy large quantities of things that don't spoil and will certainly be consumed. These would include bath products and cleansing products. So if these are on sale, you can pick them up. But don't go and purchase 'buy 1 get 1 free' packets of chips or donuts!

- Try to shop alone and when not really starved! When we shop with others, especially kids, we get forced into buying unnecessary things. Also, when we are hungry we normally over-buy. Not a good way to go, when you want to save on groceries.

- Check your supermarket's websites for printable coupons. These really do help.

- Plant a garden in your backyard and save money on some common veges and/or foods.

- When buying things like soaps, cleansing products, bath products, toilet paper etc, always buy in bulk. Eg.from Costco or Sam's club.

- Finally, to save money on groceries, keep your eyes on the register when the items are being scanned. Before you leave the store, check your bills to ensure that you have not been overcharged.
