How to Save Hundreds on Groceries

Kathy Wiehl
Is the high cost of groceries getting you down? Do you want to save money but think that cutting coupons is a wast of time? If so, read on. I will show you that cutting coupons can be quick, easy and even fun!

Hundreds of shoppers are now using a site called Coupon Mom. This website shows you how to combine coupons with sales to maximize your savings at the grocery store and chain drug stores. By using this system, you can even get some items for free!

Here is how you do it.

1. Buy a Sunday paper or two (or more if the coupons are great) and remove the coupon inserts. File these by date. For your first time, you'll only have 1 week's worth, but that is okay. You can add to it later.

2. When you are ready to make your shopping list, go to www.couponmom.com and register. The first time you register, you will probably need to click through a bunch of offers and it will probably annoy you but trust me. This is worth it. You'll only have to do this once.

3. After your registration is complete, log in. Click on "Grocery Deals By State" on the left hand side of the screen. After that, find your state and store in the dropdown menu and click on it.

4. You will see a line item list on your computer screen. This will show you everything that is one sale. The first column will display the value, publishing date and source for applicable coupons. Next to that, you will see the name of the item, followed by coupon value, quanitity needed to buy to get the deal, sale price, final price and percentage saved.

5. Decide which items you want to buy. My advice is to stock up on things that are nearly free after combining coupons with sales. Click the check boxes next to each item and then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "display selected deals" then print your list.

6. Obviously you can't live on what is on sale so you will need to add to your list. I like to stop now and plan my menu, taking into consideration the sale items plus the items I have on hand from previous sales. After your menu is planned you know what else you need for the week. Add to your list by hand wCriting the rest on the bottom of the list you just printed.

7. Now, go back to your computer and go back to www.couponmom.com. This time, you will click "Grocery Coupon Database." This database allows you to enter each item you are buying and it will tell you if there is a coupon that you can use. Go through your handwritten items one at a time and do this.

8. Now that you have your printed and handwritten list from Couponmom.com, go pull out your file of coupon inserts from the Sunday paper. Next to each item you have the date in which each coupon was published and you will also have the information about which specific insert the coupon can be found. RP= Red Plum, SS= Smart Source, and so on. Clip only the coupons you need and save the rest for later shopping trips.

This method can save hundreds, especially if you stock up on coupons and then save them until your favorite grocery items go on sale. You can also stack Sunday coupons with store coupons for even deeper savings.
