How to Save on Your Light Bill

K.L. Hopkins
  1. Replacing your light bulbs with the CFL bulb or LED bulb can save more money than you may think. For example: A regular light bulb uses anywhere from 40 watts to 100 watts. A CFL bulb uses about 13 watts compared to a 60 watt light bulb. For even more savings a LED bulb uses around 2 watts. Now mind you the LED bulb is more expensive to buy, but does save more in the long run. Replacing 7 regular bulbs with 7 LED bulbs is the same as using a 14 watt light bulb. They can be purchased for around $35.00 per bulb.

  2. Another step to take to lower your light bill is to turn off things not needed during the day. If your not home, turn off the bathroom light. If it's a cooler day, turn off the air conditioner. If it's a warmer day turn down your heat. For window a/c units, you can put them on a timer that will turn it on a few minutes before you arrive home. Buying a programmable thermostat will do the same for your heat.

  3. Turning computers off at night can help save as well. Teenagers don't think about turning it off at night, giving a friendly reminder that they can make it live longer by letting it rest may get through to them more than saying we need to save money.

  4. During the summer, keeping curtains and blind closed can help to cool your home without using the a/c as much. During the winter, allowing the sunlight in can help to heat your home. Now this won't work if your windows aren't insulated.

  5. If you can fix gaps in the windows or doors with weather stripping, it will allow you to not have to use the heat or a/c as much as well.

  6. Outdoor lighting should be replaced with either CFL bulbs or solar lighting. They make the bug lights in the CFL bulb so it won't attract bugs as much as others.

After dreaming for years of becoming a writer, I have struggled and am finally getting there. Although some of my older articles aren't very good, I can say that the newer ones have and will keep improving....  View profile
