1. Pay yourself first.
This one is one of the most important lifestyle changes you will ever make. You have to start getting in the mindset that your savings account is just like a bill. Figure out what ten percent of your paycheck is and put that towards your 'savings bill'. Every check, after paying off your bills, make sure to put ten percent away for yourself. If you get in the habit of looking at your savings as a bill or a payment, it will get easier to put that money away. By leaving it in your checking account, it's too easy to spend.
2. The best way to save money is to make more money.
Take an honest look at your job or career. Are you floating through it, happy with what you have? If not, look at what you can do to improve your salary. Sometimes it's hard to look at yourself and say you can do better, but if you are honest with yourself, you may just be able to improve in this area. Work hard for a raise, or if you must, change jobs or even careers if you think you are spinning your wheels. It's a heck of a lot easier to save money when you are making more money.
3. Live within your means.
This is where all those tips from the other articles come in handy. The thing is, all the tips in the world aren't going to help you if you keep spending more then you make. Cutting up your credit cards is a start. But truly living more simply, especially in such a hi-tech age, can save you tons of money. Do you really need that latest cell phone? The newest car? Learning to live within your income will undoubtedly help you sock away some cash for the time when you can pay for a big-ticket item without credit. It's one of the best money savers there is.
Just remember, money can't buy you happiness, but it sure does help.
