1. Start by doing an inventory of what you already have an can get away with using. This would include backpacks, lunchboxes and even basic supplies.

2. Put off what you don't need immediately. If new clothes are on your list, consider waiting an extra month until they go on sale.

3. Shop the sales and stock up with the low prices. Items such as paper will most likely need to be re-stocked during the school year so why not stock up when it's cheap?

4. Don't put your shopping off until the last minute. You will most likely have to pay full price.

5. Know what items your child will most likely need and purchase them before you get the actual back to school list. Tissue boxes, paper, and pencils are an example of items which usually appear on the school supply lists.

6. To get the best deals, you will most likely need to venture out to the stores more often and you will most likely need to keep more stores in mind for your shopping.

7. Don't forget to check out the sales at office stores, grocery stores and drug stores. They will usually offer leader items to get you in there.

8. Check the ads, look for coupons, and do your match-up lists just as you would with grocery shopping.

9. Stick to your list and try to not be tempted by the items not on sale or impulse items. Chances are these may eventually go on sale anyway.

10. Certain stores do huge clearance sales the week after school start in order to make room for the next big earning season- Halloween.

11. Does your state have a sales tax holiday? You can check to see if your state does here.

12. Don't have a lot of time to do your back to school shopping? Consider joining forces with someone else. You can split the list up and each tackle a different store purchasing items for one another.

Taking small steps can help save money. It's all about the back to school smart shopping strategy.
