How To: Save Money on Back-to-School Spending

David Kenny
There are many ways to save money when going back-to-school. By cutting your spending with your house supplies, food, clothes, electronics and entertainment you can save money and still have a great time at college.

For housing supplies make sure not to buy more than you need. You don't need two vacuums, four Televisions or each or own bottle of laundry soap. The cost of housing on campus is a rip-off. Some Nursing students get free room and board when helping a senior citizen, or even help with childcare or maid hours in exchange for free place to stay.

Buy a college cookbook and cook at home. Take lunches to school instead of spending money on overpriced cafeteria food. There are microwaves in the cafeteria for you to bring food to heat up. Lasts nights dinner, hot-pockets, and cup-of-noddle soaps are inexpensive lunches. A great way to save money on food is to make sure you to buy reusable plates, cups, and bowls that are microwaveable. If you go to Wal-Mark you can equip your dorm with all dinnerware for under $10. Also try to get together with your roommates and buy food and snack in balk, because individually wrapped servings are a big rip-off. Most students gain weight in their first year of school, so stocking healthy foods can be the difference of gaining weight or not.

Clothes is an area where most student over spend. College student wear jeans, sneakers, tees, sweatshirts and sweat pants 90% of the time, so don't buy too many jeans, shoes, and tee-shirts. It is important to shave costs by buying five pairs of jeans not fourteen, ten shirts not twenty, because it can add up. Look at Marshals, Plato's Closet, and the outlets for designer clothes for cheap prices

Student often spend to much money on electronics and entertainment when moving into dorm rooms and apartments. The big mistake that students make is on computers and televisions. You do not need a state-of-the-art laptop computer or the color computer you want. A simple computer will do great as long as your major isn't in computers animation. You can buy a simple laptop computer for under $350. The library has a printer and it is reasonably priced. Since dorms are usually small, a small extra television from home will work good. All students should invest in a alarm clock to keep from sleeping through and being late to classes. Entertainment is available everywhere on campus. Do not spend money on video games. Go out try all the free and fun entertainment that your college has to offer.
