How to Save Money by Bartering for Goods and Services

Georgia Lund
Bartering for goods and services is nothing new, it's an old idea that has seen a resurgence in popularity since the economy has tanked and money is tight. The basic premise of bartering is when one person offers their services (babysitting, carpentry, etc.) free of charge in exchange for another person's service of equal value. Durable goods can be bartered for between two parties as well, such as automotive repair in exchange for a lawn mower. Bartering simply involves a meeting of the minds between two people who possess something the other one wants, with no money being exchanged. These tips will get the bartering started and the money saved.

Become a Good Listener

Listen for what people are saying they need or want, it might present the perfect opportunity for a barter. You may overhear someone say they would like to have their house painted but are unable to afford it. If you possess the skills and equipment to paint a house, talk with the person and see what skills or goods they possess that you have need of and a money saving bartering arrangement just might be in the making.

Make a Barter List

Make a list of all the goods and services you need and all the good and services that you have to offer. When a bartering opportunity arises, you'll be prepared.

Use creative thinking when deciding what goods and services you can offer on a barter list. A talented cook can offer to cater an event, prepare and deliver family meals or bake cakes for a bake sale.

Don't limit yourself however, think outside the box and you may discover hidden talents and abilities. Think big when bartering, the bigger the barter the more money that is saved.

Be Proactive and Persevere When Bartering

Take a proactive approach to bartering by placing an ad in the local newspaper, listing the goods or services you want and what good and services you have to offer. Gather friends and neighbors together for a bartering party or form a babysitting co-op so money can be saved on babysitting services. Persevere when bartering, just because one person declines your offer doesn't mean the next person will.

Bartering has been around for centuries as a means of obtaining goods and services without the spending money, and it's a great way to save money today.

Because of the economy, I think bartering is happening more often.

Hey, very interesting article! Nice to see that somebody else thinks the same way. I figured bartering as an option for me when I was badly off. First with friends and family, then I found barterquest.com. The only site I think which is free, and where you can barter everything from goods to services and even real estates. It saves you a lot of money.

We need to get back to the old ways of doing business, bartering is just one of them. Cheers :)
