Due to the rising cost of food, staying within your current grocery budget is becoming more of a challenge for many people. The rising food prices make it imperative that you have a strong strategy when stocking your home with groceries. Breakfast is very important, because it is the fuel that we are choosing to start our day with. Don't let money be an excuse to serve your family what ever is on sale. There are 3 great tips below on how to eat healthfully without relying on sales or coupons.

When shopping on a budget for breakfast items it sometimes seems easier to shop for processed breakfast items on sale. However there is not much value in buying items that may not last through one meal if you have a growing family. For example if you have 3 or more growing children, a box of cereal priced at $4 a box may only last through one meal. If the cereal is fiber less, you will need additional side items to ensure that your family is not hungry by lunch time..

Choose Produce

Many times, it is so easy to only pick up your family staples. Do you routinely pick up exactly the same items every week? The great thing about the produce department is that there is always something on sale. The inexpensive items from the produce department can be high fiber side items to help your breakfasts become more nutritious and inexpensive.

Fruit

Fruit can be chopped and stored for use throughout the week. Canned fruit in natural juice without added corn syrup or sugar is a great addition your fresh fruit salad. Stone fruits, melons, canned fruits, are great additions to your fruit salad. Do not add any bananas in advance; they will turn brown and mushy. Chopped fruit can be used to add flavor to oatmeal, yogurt, or any other hot cereal. . Smoothies are a great way to serve the fruit as part of your morning meal.

Fruit is a great side item to warm breads, such as pancakes, waffles, and French toast. To save time a large batch pancakes or waffles can be cooked on weekends. Separate out enough for a meal, and place into freezer bags. These can be defrosted overnight and warmed up for a quick healthy breakfast.

Vegetables

If you prefer vegetables with your breakfast, select several that appeal to your taste buds. Green onions, bell peppers, spinach, kale, and tomatoes would be good choices. Chop these vegetables and place into plastic containers or sandwich bags that will keep the produce fresh throughout the week. These vegetables will be great inside of omelets, breakfast tacos, or on the side with fresh, canned, or bottled vegetable juice. All varieties of potatoes can be served as hash browns, and the leftovers make great additions to breakfast tacos.

Leftovers

Serving left over meats with breakfast is a great way to use small amounts of meat. Quickly remembering to use the leftovers within a few days is best. Serving fish, ground meat, sausage, or steak diced in an omelet is a great way to keep the complaints down about eating leftovers. Adding meats to breakfast sandwiches and flat breads is great for very busy mornings when you do not have time, to sit down and eat.

Eating more fruits and vegetables with your morning meal is a great way to combat the rising food costs. Serving your family more unprocessed food is a great way to remove unnecessary chemicals and artificial flavors from the family diet. Trial and error can let you know which produce your family likes, so that you can add those to your staple healthy grocery list. Use these tips the next time you visit your produce department.
