How to Save Money on Car Repairs

While owning a car can be a source of independence and freedom, it can also become a major problem when something needs to be fixed. Car repairs can often be more expensive than the car itself, at which point the owner must decide which is more frugal: fixing the car or purchasing a new vehicle. If you are having trouble with your automobile, here are a few tips on how to save money on car repairs.

How to Save Money on Car Repairs: Get More Than One Estimate
You wouldn't believe how much two garages or auto repair shops can differ on price. A few years ago, my Explorer needed a new mass air flow system, which is not a cheap repair. I got three estimates from three different shops. The first quoted me $1,800, the second estimated $1,200 and the third gave me the winning price of $985. Ironically, the third garage had the best reputation among the three, and my Explorer hasn't had a problem with the mass air flow system since. So even though you don't want to go with a seedy garage that might damage your car further, be sure to shop around for the best price.

How to Save Money on Car Repairs: Don't Fall for 'Additional Repairs'
I used to get my car's oil changed at the same center every three months without fail. Each time I brought my car in, they would "offer" to fix something else that was wrong with the car. First, the left brake light was out; then I needed a new oil filter; after that it was the spark plugs. I'm ashamed to say that I didn't catch on until they told me I needed a new brake light (the same side) two times in a row. Sometimes, they are just being kind to point out something they have discovered during their work. However, don't just fall for this line; ask to see the problem on your car.

How to Save Money on Car Repairs: Do It Yourself
While I'm no auto mechanic, there are certain things that I've learned to do for myself. I can replace my brake pads, change my spark plugs and install new windshield wipers. You should also know how to replace the bulbs in your head- and tail-lights, and you should be taught how to change a tire. For example, bulbs cost around $3.00 for a set of two. If you had your mechanic do it, the bill could be more than $25.00. And just because your mechanic tells you something needs to be fixed doesn't mean that you can't take it home and replace the part yourself.

How to Save Money on Car Repairs: Buy Your Own Parts
Let's say that your mechanic informs you of a problem that you don't know how to fix on your own. That's okay, but don't pay for both the parts and the labor at the garage. Instead, head out to your local auto parts store and buy it yourself. Garages have been known to charge up to a 50% markup on parts, which will mean spending more money than is required.

How to Save Money on Car Repairs: Inspections
This is one of the big ones. When you go to have your car inspected, the mechanic will check several things: your windshield wiper blades, your headlights and taillights, your seatbelt straps and other things. Before you go to have your inspection completed, make sure all of these things are in working order. A little trick I've learned concerning the wiper blades: take a paper towel soaked in alcohol and clean the edges of each of the wiper blades. Even if the blades aren't worn, the mechanic will tell you that you must buy new ones before your car can pass the inspection, and just because the blades are dirty.
