How to Save Money on Your Christmas Shopping

Birdie Grace
Here's a fun fact we all know. Christmas can get expensive. With department stores, specialty stores, and even plain old grocery stoles are throwing ads and specials your way. With Christmas music coming from the radio and classic Christmas movies on tv it can be easy to get carried away by the Christmas spirit and spend way too much money. Here are some simple tips to keep you from over spending this holiday season.

Pick names.
Instead of buying gifts from everyone to everyone have the family pick names from a hat. That way everyone gets a gift, but you don't have to overspend. You could also combine this strategy with a price limit. Ask everyone to put a price limit on the items on their wish list. This will make Christmas a lot more affordable.

Little gifts.
Buy lots of little gifts instead of a couple big ones. This can actually save you money. It's also makes for a fun Christmas morning when the family wakes up and finds dozens and dozens of individually wrapped gifts under the tree. In order for this to actually work, you do have to keep the gifts small.

Donate to charity.
Make a donation to a family members favorite charity in their name. If everyone in the family does this several charities can be beneficiaries of your good will. There may not be a ton of presents under the tree using this method but it will allow you to spend more quality family time on Christmas day. Instead of opening presents play a board game or watch a favorite movie together.

Volunteer.
Volunteer as a family. Everyone can give input as to which charity you volunteer with. Not only is volunteering very rewarding, you'll be helping out those in need during what might have been a difficult season for them. Who knows, your family may enjoy helping others so much that it becomes a holiday tradition.

Adopt.
A pet that is. It's true, a pet will cost you quite a bit in the long run but the immediate cost will be relatively low. And if you make this pet the only gift for your family this holiday season you'll really save money. After all, who can resist big puppy eyes or a clumsy kitten?

Foster.
If adopting a pet is too much commitment you might consider fostering one instead. Fostering a pet works much like fostering a child does. Many agencies have a fostering program and most will pay for routine expenses such as veterinarian visits and vaccinations. Some will even pay for food and toys. You get all the benefits of loving a pet for none of the cost. Of course, you have to keep in mind that at some point you may need to give up the pet to the family who intends to adopt it. If you have young children this may be very difficult after they've bonded with the animal.

Hopefully with some of these tips you'll be able to save a lot of money this holiday season.
