Christmas can cost quite a bit of money when it comes to gifts, decorations and food. It is very hard to come up with money for this all at once. Saving money and utilizing some of these ideas can save you a lot of stress as well as help your wallet.

Saving Money in General

Open a savings account just for Christmas savings. You can open up an account that you just simply don't touch unless you are depositing money to it. There are also some banks that have special Christmas savings accounts. These account generally don't let you take the money out until a specific date set by the bank itself. These accounts also require a minimum weekly or bi-weekly deposit. If you want to deposit more than the minimum, by all means, do so. The more you are able to deposit, the better off you will be when it comes to getting your money at the end.

Save all of your change. You will be surprised at how quickly this adds up. If you opened a bank account, as previously suggested, you can deposit your change into the account throughout the year. If you don't have a bank account, keep saving all year long. Don't cash in the change until you are ready to go shopping.

Buying Gifts

You don't have to buy all of your gifts just at Christmas time. You can shop for gifts all year long. Through the year, stores have sales on tons of items that are perfect gifts for your friends and family. One tip to remember when buying clothes ahead of time is to make sure those clothes will fit the person you are buying them for when Christmas rolls around. You can find several children's toys on sale throughout the year as well as collectibles and anything else you can think of to use for Christmas presents. When Christmas time rolls around, you will be glad that you have only so many gifts to buy because you have already done most of your shopping.

Have you ever received a Christmas gift you didn't really want or you know you wouldn't use? Well, save it until the following Christmas and re-gift it. To save yourself some embarrassment and hurt feelings, if you received the gift from a friend, re-gift it to a co-worker or family member. If you received the gift from a family member, re-gift it to a co-worker or friend. If you received the gift from a co-worker, re-gift it to a friend or family member. You get the idea. However, this can save you a lot of money as well and you are re-gifting to someone whom you know will appreciate the item.

You can also shop online at places like Ebay. You can find many treasures there and you can shop there all year long. Many items are brand new and can be bought at very cheap prices compared to what you would pay in the store. If you know something specific you are looking for then watch for a good deal throughout the year or you can just browse for different items by category and you would be surprised what you would come across. This is a great place to come across children's and adult's items that are in great condition or brand new.

Don't be afraid to make your own gifts. Do you have a specialty you are good at? If you are good at wood working, you can make gifts like benches and pretty shelves. If you are good at sewing, you can make original unique outfits or decorations for others. Gifts that you make are given from the heart. Generally, children don't appreciate these gifts as much but it is the thought that counts right? Making your own gifts are a great idea for the creative, crafty person.

Decorations

Buying decorations right after Christmas can save you anywhere from 25% - 90% of your money. Stores frequently have sales on their Christmas decorations within the first week after. The longer they have Christmas items, the bigger the discount to get rid of them. You can find fake Christmas trees, tree decorations, lights, yard decorations, stockings etc. This is a perfect time to stock up on decorations and other Christmas items that you will want or need for the following year.

Another thing you can do is check at garage sales and thrift stores. You can generally find decorations pretty cheap and in great shape, especially at garage sales. There are so many people that go through there items in the spring and get rid of so much. You can find some really awesome deals.

Throwing away your Christmas decorations after Christmas is not a good idea unless it is broken. You will wish you hadn't when it comes time to decorate. If you do come across a decoration that is broken, think to yourself, can I make something else out of this? Which will lead into the next tip.

Making your own decorations is a great idea as well. This is also something great for the whole family to sit and do together. You can use old decorations such as broken ones or ones that you think you can spruce up a bit. You can also just use crafty items you have laying around the house. If you Google craft ideas for Christmas you will come up with all kinds of things that you can do. Kids love to do this and it really makes your house look homey at Christmas time. This will have everyone involved and give your house a family appeal when Christmas time rolls around. You can collect different craft items throughout the year to do this and it is much cheaper than buying your own decorations. You can have a mixture of homemade Christmas items as well as store bought or just make it all homemade.

Food

Although you wouldn't think you could do much throughout the year for food, you would be surprised. Watching for sales on non-perishable items that you may use for your Christmas feast can save you a whole bunch of money. Even if it is just on canned goods. Things I buy throughout the year are the canned vegetables and the boxed food items. Even stocking up on baking items is a good idea. There are always sales on food throughout the year, even at Christmas time.
