How to Save Money when Dining at a Fancy Restaurant

Beth N.
Dining out is one of the best ways to reconnect with friends and loved ones, to relax after a hard week at work or to treat yourself for a job well done. The problem is that between appetizers, entrees, drinks and dessert your dinner bill can add up fast.

If you are like many people and are cutting back on spending these days you might think that enjoying dinner out at a restaurant is a luxury that you just can't afford anymore. Before you give up on the idea of a meal out, though, check out these tips for ways to save money eating out at a fancy restaurant. You just might be able to shave enough off your bill that you can keep dinner out on the menu.

1. Look for Deals

As fewer and fewer people go out to eat, many restaurants are feeling the sting of the current economic situation. To drum up more business many places are starting to offer fantastic deals or specials. Check through your newspaper to find restaurants that are advertising money saving specials. Jot down all the deals you find and pick the one that seems like it will give you the most bang for your buck.

2. Buy Yourself a Gift Certificate and Save

Did you know that you can sometimes buy gift certificates for less than their face value? For instance, restaurant.com sells gift certificates for popular restaurants at a savings of more than half off the face value. That means you can get a $25 gift certificate for as little as $10. That can add up to big savings on your dinner bill.

3. Eat Your Appetizer at Home

Prepare an appetizer at home before you go out so you don't have to order one at the restaurant. You can save a lot of money this way, even if you buy pre-packaged appetizers from the store. Sure you won't get the ambiance of a restaurant while you are eating your appetizer, but you can still enjoy the company of the people you are dining with.

4. Skip the Wine or Cocktails & Opt for Water

Choosing to bypass the wine, beer or cocktail menu in favor of water can save you a lot of money on your dinner bill. If you really don't want to skip having a drink with dinner ask about drink specials or order a glass of wine rather than a bottle.

5. Share your Appetizer, Entree & Dessert

Restaurant portions are far bigger than the average person needs. You can cut your dinner bill in half by splitting your appetizer, entree and dessert with someone else. Not only will you save money, but the two of you will be able to walk comfortably out of the restaurant without having to undo the top button of your pants.

Using these simple tips can help you cut down the expense of eating out so you can still enjoy fine dining on a limited budget.

Excellent tips, though I'm not sure why one would need the appetizer at all -- I rarely if ever order them.
