How to Save Money on New Driver Insurance

Casey L. Holley

Finding car insurance that is affordable for a new driver is difficult, especially when full coverage insurance is needed. However, there are some ways to minimize the costs of getting the necessary coverage.

The first thing you should do prior to trying to put a new driver on your insurance or trying to get insurance as a new driver is to take a driver's education course. However, taking any course isn't good enough. You have to contact the insurance company that you plan to use and find out what programs they recognize. Completing one of those courses will get you a discount on your premiums.

The next thing to do is to get a copy of your school transcripts if you have good grades. College and high school students with good grades, usually a 3.0 grade point average or above, may qualify for a good student discount. Even if you don't have good grades, some insurance companies provide discounts to most students.

When you call the insurance company, find out if there are any other discounts available in your area for new drivers. More and more insurance companies are offering discounts for new drivers who drive vehicles with OnStar and other comparable systems.

Don't be afraid to expand your search to Internet based companies, as long as they are part of a reputable insurance company. If you are unsure, you can contact the corporate office for the insurance company, not the Internet agent, and verify the company online.

Re-evaluate your coverage each time your policy is up for renewal. Some insurance companies offer loyalty discounts, so be sure to find out about those when you call at renewal time.
