It can be difficult to save money in America these days. Well in a lot of cases it is not hard but rather undesired by most people. It's often easier to spend with credit cards and a consumptive mindset then it is planning and budgeting one's money. Often, withholding the extremes, this method of spending isn't going to break the camels back. That is until something such as the recent economic downturn of 2008 or similar events occurs. At these points in time interest rates increase and banks and credit companies tend to lend less money then before, putting many people in tough situations that they could have avoided by being more frugal. That is why so many folks like to find a way to save money now, either to get out of or avoid debt. One way is to learn how to save money on your electric bill. This article will provide some basic steps to lower that monthly bill.

First let's break this down. The only way to save on electric or energy bills is to simply use less electricity or energy. It can't get less complicated then that. With that said one of the easiest ways is to turn off the lights in rooms that aren't being used. It's an obvious tip, one that even get PSA ads on television, but many still seem to ignore it. The same advice can be said about anything that you are not using. Items such as the television, radio, or computer can all be shut off to save a little electricity. Sure these are smaller electronics that don't take a lot of energy but it will still save you in the end.

Some consumers can choose a particular plan to save money. If a time-of-day plan is offered by your electric company then this may be for you. Essentially, you pay less for electricity used during non-peak hours of the day. These times include pretty much anytime a mass of people aren't home, they can be at work, sleeping, shopping, whatever but they're not using extra electricity. This may not be reasonable for all people though.

Lastly make sure to unplug anything in the home that is "always on" but doesn't need to be. This may include speakers for the computer, battery chargers, phone chargers and other such items. These are constant drains on energy and most people keep them plugged in all day everyday and don't realize it is costing them.
