How to Save Money on Food While Backpacking

Experienced travelers will know that wherever you go, food can quickly become very expensive. While backpacking, this can be especially true. Obviously, food bought in a store which you will cook yourself will be cheaper than dining out in a restaurant each night. However, either way, the cost of the food while backpacking can get extremely expensive depending where you are backpacking at. Your best plan, when going on a backpacking trip, is to purchase the food before you take one step with your boots into the outdoors.

Try to Bargain Shop

The best place to shop for food, before your backpacking trip, is the place you shop for food at on a regular basis. Be sure to check the circular in your paper before your backpacking trip and take note of any deals on the food you will want to bring along on your backpacking trip. Ideally, you want to purchase items such as flavored noodles, rice, pasta, items which only require water to make. You can bring along some cans of soup or vegetables but don't forget the added weight may be a little burdensome while out backpacking.

By far, the number one type of food that gets bought by people who backpack is snack food. This is actually an advantage, because you can find lots of snack food that can easily become a backpacking food. By doing so, you can save yourself a ton of money. Another advantage to this is snack food is generally small and The biggest backpacking food item that people often spend money on as they travel is snack food. You can find lots of backpacking food that can act as snacks, and this is the best way to make sure that you are saving money.

You should be buying lots of things that are small and condensed. Food such as granola bars. More often than not, when you are out backpacking, you will be tempted to stop into a store and buy a candy bar or anything else to help control your hunger. This is where the money starts to add up. If you already planned ahead and have a whole package of candy bars or granola bars or whatever packed that you can just grab and eat, you'll save yourself a lot of money. Breakfast bars, or fresh fruit should also be packed as backpacking food. If you planned ahead and have enough food for breakfast and lunch, you'll be able to have a nice dinner out if you want with all the money you saved by planning ahead.

It makes no difference which kind of backpacking trip you are planning, your requirements for food are going to be pretty much the same. You're going to want to purchase backpacking food that is small and compact. You don't want your food to take up a lot of room or get too heavy. It's also a good idea to try and bring some backpacking food which fits into your pockets. That way, if you need something to snack on, it's right within reach without having to stop, and dig around inside your backpack. When it comes to snacks, it's always better to have healthy snacks while backpacking. A few candy bars won't hurt. However, it's better if you choose granola bars or energy bars. The sugar crash can be especially bad on you when you have to keep trudging a few miles more to get to your next destination.
