How to Save Money on Gas

Saving money on gas is a hot topic right now with the summer driving season approcahing as gasoline prices creep upwards. The best way to save money on gas is to be a smart shopper by taking advantage of retail gas discount programs, driving within the speed limit and keeping tires properly inflated.

Drive within the Speed Limit to Save Money on Gas

According to a government fuel economy website, gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 miles per hour. While peek fuel efficiency varies per make and model of car, it's a safe bet that vehicles will get their best gas mileage if you stay within the speed limit. The government website goes on to state that each five miles per hour you drive over 60 is like paying an extra $0.24 per gallon of gas, depending on current gas prices. To further save money on gas, use cruise control, if it's available, to help maintain a consistent speed within the speed limit and get the most cost effective use of fuel for your car.

Proper Tire Pressure Saves Money on Gas

The government's fuel economy website further states that keeping tires at the proper pressure will result in a 3.3 % improvement in gas mileage. The proper tire pressure for your vehicle can be found on the car, often inside the glove box, on the driver's side door jamb and in the manual. Fuel economy is compromised for every one psi drop in pressure for all four tires. To save money on gas, it's worth it to check the tire pressure frequently, especially before long trips and as part of routine maintenance.

Look for Retail Programs that Offer Gas Discounts

Save money on gas by taking advantage of retail programs that offer gas discounts, like Price Chopper's Fuel AdvantEdge program. Price Chopper gives customers $0.10 off per gallon of gas for every $50 spent in groceries at their store. For example, customers who spend $200 in a shopping trip receive $0.40 off per gallon the next time they fill up at a participating Sunoco station. This discount has resulted in real savings on gas for many Price Chopper customers. If Price Chopper isn't available in your area, look for similar programs through grocery stores, banks and credit card companies.

You can save money on gas by driving within the speed limit, keeping tires properly inflated and taking advantage of retail gas discount programs.
