Taking a Spring Break Vacation? Learn How to Roadtrip on a Budget!
1. Inflate Your Tires - While this is a pretty common tip many people still do not know it. To provide the correct amount of rubber to concrete interaction for maximum fuel efficiency you should inflate your tires to the maximum PSI. This is the PSI displayed on your tire walls, not in your owner's manual. You will see the increase in MPG after doing so, be sure to check frequently throughout your trip and keep your tires' air pressure up there.
2. Don't Run Empty - While on your Spring Break vacation you will probably have no idea what gas prices lie ahead simply because you're not in your own neck of the woods. In order to save gas money you should avoid going empty, which may force you to fill up at an expensive gas station. Instead, keep an eye on average gas prices. Whenever you see something a good deal below the average price, even if you have half a tank, pull over and gas up. This is a great way to save some extra money on gas at the pump.
3. Take The Interstate - Interstates are not only the quickest routes across our country they also provide the benefit of being straight and free of stop lights. Because of this you are able to minimize acceleration, which is a huge gas waster, and get far more MPG.
4. Drive The Speed Limit - Although you may be on a hurry to get your Spring Break vacation going avoid speeding. Cars traveling above 60 MPH get far worse gas mileage then those going the speed limit.
5. Use Cruise Control - Whenever possible use your cruise control. This allows your car to maintain a constant speed instead of losing momentum and having to accelerate again, which drains your gas tank more quickly.
6. Avoid A/C - Although some Spring Break destinations make this gas saving tip out of the question try to avoid using you're A/C whenever possible, it takes extra gas to power it.
7. Know How to Load Your Car - Whenever possible put things inside your car instead of on top, aerodynamics play a huge roll in fuel economy, especially at high speeds.
8. Drive Defensively - Although we all get irritated sometimes, driving defensively actually provides you with more MPG. Aggressive drivers tend to accelerate and brake a lot, defensive drivers use less gas and more momentum.
9. Replace Your Air Filter First - Before setting out on your Spring Break vacation be sure to check and, if necessary, replace your air filter. A clogged air filter can significantly reduce your gas mileage.
10. Have Mobile Internet? - If you have access to mobile Internet then you need to get in the habit of using GasBuddy. This is a website where users input current gas prices at different gas stations in their area. Since you're out of your element on your Spring Break vacation this is the best way to find cheap gas and avoid being ripped off.
