America's economy is headed down the tubes and the average consumer feels the pain, but how do we relieve it? Saving money any way you can may sound difficult, but with these tips and tricks, you can save money at the grocery store.

Tip One: Know the difference between need and want. You need toilet tissue. You do not need 4 different kinds of salsa. Knowing what you need to live on and knowing what is not necessary is crucial.

Tip Two: Coupons! The local newspapers usually have centers filled with coupons. These coupons can save hundreds in a year. It may be a small incontinence to cut them out and organize them, but in the long run, they will save you money. Another place to look for coupons is on the internet. Sign up for a monthly newsletter for your local supermarket. These are full of money saving coupons. Manufacturer's coupons are also on the internet. Just visit the manufacturer's website to find their coupons.

Tip Three: Avoid name brands. Generic or store brands are usually just as good, if not better, than the name brands. This may take some trial and error. If you find that the taste or function of a generic product is sub-par, then by all means, get the name brand. Also listen to your friends who have tried both brands. You must weigh the difference in price and quality.

Tip Four: Only make the trips you need. Saving money on the gas for the trip to the grocery store is important too. Making a trip once a week or once a month can make a huge difference in the money you spend on gas. When you make the trip to the grocery store, buy enough so that you will not have to return shortly. Also, do not leave the house just for a grocery store trip. Run some other errands while you are out.

Tip Five: Avoid convince foods such as prepared dinners or pre-made foods. These may make it easier to cook however, it will cost you more. These items are created to save time, not money.

Tip Six: Look around. Grocery stores are designed to get you to spend the most money. Sale items will catch your attention; however, they may actually not be a bargain. More expensive items will be place at eye level, allowing you to see them before you see the cheaper, less expensive items.

These tips should help you save money on your next grocery store trip. And remember, never shop on an empty stomach!
