Saving money at the grocery store doesn't mean you have to eat less or icky foods. By shopping smart you can actually bring home more food for those great meals.
One of the most important things to do before you ever go to the grocery store is to, "plan your meals." Planning your meals for the week or more is the best way to save money on your food bill. If you know what your going to cook and serve for a meal each day, you can purchase the items that are needed just for those meals ahead of time and have everything on hand for preparing.
Before you heading out, be sure to have a list of what you are planning on buying, items you have coupons for, and what's on sale. You want to prioritize your shopping list. List the necessary items first. If you have the available funds in your food budget, then you can purchase the items you just want. A shopping list left at home won't help!
A number one way to save money shopping is to not buy store brand products. The big name companies make most all-generic brands. They are simply labeled and packaged differently. Unless you have a coupon and the name brand is on sale, you are usually going to pay more for the exact same item that could be bought under the generic brand name. Since the packaging is just for looks, why spend more money on it when the packaging will just be thrown in the trashcan.
Another way is: Save your leftovers! Leftovers can be frozen to make delicious new meals at a later date. There are endless possibilities to revive leftover dishes into something new and yummy.
Always keep a basic list of the items that you always buy when shopping, such as seasonings, baking supplies, and can goods. When you are running low or are out of a necessity make a note of it on the list. This will insure that when you shop, you won't forget something you need.
You never want to do your grocery shopping when you are hungry. Eat something before leaving home! If you do go shopping for food and you are hungry, you will undoubtedly end up buying more than your budget will allow.
When a holiday is approaching make sure you allow the holiday meal in your budget.
When buying meat always buy boneless trimmed meats. You are paying a little more for boneless but you are getting more meat for your money, not paying for the weight of the bone and fat.
Do you want to stretch you food budget even future? More tips are listed below.
1. Don't shop after work for the day's meal. This gets expensive.
2. Read your weekly newspaper food section for local grocery sales and menu ideas.
3. Clip coupons. You'll also find coupons in women's and general-interest magazines, in swap boxes, generally found at supermarkets and also in some public libraries. Online, you will also find coupons; national-brands offer coupons on there sites.
4. Don't waist your money on prepared foods. Instead, prepare meals ahead of time and freeze them, or double the recipe when cooking, and freeze the second for a hectic day coming up.
5. Use the farmers market. Buy produce that's in season. They are inexpensive compared to out of season produce.
6. The highest priced items are at about chest high. Reach up or bend down to get the cheaper or generic brands.
7. Don't you just love the main isles in your grocery store? The main paths you have to weave in and out to get to the isle you want. They are usually strewn with high-priced items. Stay away!
8. Shop early in the day. You will get through faster with your list and spend less.
9. Shop with a calculator. This way, you can figure if the unit price is cheaper than buying one of the same. You can also keep a running total of your purchases as you make your way down each isle.
10. Request price matching. Find a store in your area that will honor all competitors' ads. You'll save money, time and gas.
11. Always be-aware of bargain stores. They don't always mean you will get the best price on an item.
12. Check your receipts. No matter how careful you or the store employees might be, computers do make mistakes.
You will be amazed at the amount of money you can save on your grocery bill, by using these tips. You can put your savings to work. Set some specific goals for the money you're not spending on food.

NEver go to the store with your husband when he is hungry, either. They are as bad if not worse than children. Great article.
