Use the self-checkout lane. Most grocery stores put impulse items such as gum, candy, and magazines in the checkout lanes to try to entice shoppers to spend money on these items. By using the self-checkout lane, you can avoid this temptation and save money.

Avoid "quick trips" to the grocery store. Studies show that people who did bought on average 54% more merchandise than they would have otherwise. Instead, make a list of the items you need. This way, you already have an idea of what you should buy. Get these items, and nothing more.

Use coupons. This is one of the easiest ways to save money buying groceries. Buy your Sunday paper. There is usually a large section of coupons that you can cut out and use. Another way to get coupons is to look online. There are websites that offer coupons to consumers.

Don't let emotion cause you to spend more money. Recent studies have shown that people people who are mildly to severely depressed spent more money at the grocery store. Be sure you sort out any issues you may have before you go grocery shopping.

Stay away from the middle aisles of the grocery store. This is where the processed foods like snack cakes, candy, and potato chips can be found. Instead, stay along the outer aisles of the grocery store. This is where nutritious items such as fresh fruit, vegetables, and whole grains can be found.

Make an investment in your future. Buy as many healthy, nutritious foods as possible. Although you initially save money by buying processed foods, you actually pay in the long run. Many people who have a diet filled with processed foods suffer from diseases like heart disease, stroke, and hypertension disorder. Instead, buy fresh fruit, vegetables, and whole grains.
