How to Save Money at the Gym

JJ Yoon
Many people these days are very concerned about being in top-notch shape. And who could blame them, with obesity rates rising like a rocket. Joining a gym is a great way to keep in shape and meet new people. While finding a gym near you is usually easy, the hard part is deciding which one to join. There are many kinds to choose from, ranging with the up-scale chain gyms (LA Fitness, Lifetime Fitness), to small independent gyms. The down economy and tough market makes this a perfect time to get great deals at whatever gym you choose to sign up for.

Gyms are not going to let you walk away. Always remember that YOU are in control, and that THEY are the ones trying to earn a commission off of you. I am currently a member of 24 Hour Fitness, and my sign up went something like this. The salesperson offered me the "deal of a lifetime", and said this was a limited time offer only. Most gyms you sign up for will have some "amazing deal" going on, and will press you to sign up.

The most important thing about bargaining down your membership fee, or bargaining for anything for that matter, is to not be ashamed. Do not be afraid to ask for lower prices. You may be surprised at how much gyms are willing to wiggle, if you know which buttons to press.

When you meet the salesperson, first, lay down a low flat price you came up with in advance. For example, tell him/her that you are willing to buy the membership right then and there for $30 initiation and $25/month. (Which is rather cheap at a high-scale 24 Hour Fitness). If they accept, great! No need to read the rest of this article. If they say they can't do that, then that's where your negotiating begins. On a side note, always check if the company you are employed with has a company plan with a gym. This can save you alot of money.

Once they refuse your first offer, ask them for theirs. And no matter what they say, always refuse. (Unless the offer is really too good to pass up). Ask them if another gym near you wouldn't offer a lower price. Do not be afraid to just get up and say "I will come back tommorow". This will usually result in a counter-offer which is lower. Always keep in mind that, in this tough economy, gyms need you more than ever. They will not let a prospective cash cow walk away. Knowing they can milk you for $30+ a/month is too much for them. And if you are a student, say that you are. This can give you an additional discount at most gyms.

Negotiating with a gym can cut your price in half or more. It is definitely a good idea to bargain, if your a fan of saving a money. If not, well, you probably wouldn't have clicked on this article.
