How to Save Money for an International Family Vacation

Ted Sherman
International travel is an enjoyable and essential way for families to discover new worlds and cultures. Whether planning a week in London or a week in the Amazon, saving together as a family can make an international family vacation even more special and exciting.

Finding creative ways to save money for the trip is the key to keeping it fun and interesting. Parents should make it a family project and bring each member into discussions to determine estimated budget, ways to cut back on expenses and how to make extra money to use on the trip.

Everyone contributes ideas to the savings plan
By bringing them into the decision-making process, the youngsters will know their suggestions are respected and appreciated. It will also be a learning experience about the importance of budgets, savings and expenses.

Establish a budget
Parents must determine how much money they need for the vacation trip. Before any detailed plans are made, methods are needed for saving the required money and, if necessary, to find sources of extra income for the trip.

Discuss various destinations
Bring everyone together to discuss possible destinations and estimated costs. For example, the budget can't afford a trip to Hong Kong, but can cover a week in Hawaii. Once a decision is made, anticipating it can serve as incentive for each family member to cooperate with the savings plan.

Put ideas for saving into practice
Consider the many ways to reduce everyday expenses. Ideas for minor cut-backs can't be very effective. For example, giving up snacks for several months could result in savings of an insignificant $100. Conversely, if parents are smokers, and decide to quit temporarily, the savings for the trip could be $500 or more.

Find ways to make extra money for the trip
To plan to meet the trip's expected budget, as well as to provide for added expenses, new sources of income should be considered. For example, one or both parents could find temporary part-time jobs at restaurants or retail stores. Older children can earn money for babysitting, cleaning, yard work and other neighborhood jobs. Younger children can earn money from parents for pet care, room clean-up, laundry, dishwashing and other household tasks.

The family can do a house cleaning and then have a garage sale to earn money for the vacation. Also after a house cleaning, why not sell some items on eBay. The whole family can watch and track the auction progress.

To add incentive for the children to earn extra money for the trip, parents may keep a record of the total earned by each child. Then, during the vacation, that amount may be used for the child's pleasure to buy souvenirs and toys.
