Catherine Woods
Kitchen appliances are a huge expense for many home owners and so it is important to know how to save money on them. With brand new appliances costing several hundred dollars, it is important to know how to save money on this large expense. So use these ways to save money on your kitchen appliances the next time you find yourself in the market.

Get it Free

If you are not too picky about how your new appliance looks, try to get it free. Look in the "Free" section on Craigslist and sign up for your local Freecycle. Many times people will post working appliances for free so long as you haul it away. This is perfect for someone who is working on a tight budget because all you will need is a truck and an extra set of hands. So keep an eye out for the appliances you need and with some luck you may get it for free.

Buy it Used

Buying used appliances is a great way to save money on kitchen appliances. People will often buy upgraded appliances and then turn around sell their working appliances inexpensively. This is where you can get some great deals. Though it will be difficult to find a stainless steel or high end appliances this way, you will still be able to find nice working appliances for hundreds less than you would pay for a new one.

Find a Surplus

If buying used appliances bothers you or you don't have much success at it, look for a surplus store in your area. Surplus stores offer a small selection of new appliances for less than the large home improvement stores will charge. Though the exact appliance you wanted will likely not be there, something similar and just as good will likely be available. So take a look at these money saving stores before you move on to the big box retailers.

Scratch and Dent

Floor model appliances, also known as scratch and dent models, can save you a few hundred dollars if you can find one that works for you. These appliances are great money savers because they are in perfect working condition but since they have a few small flaws they are marked down. Just make sure that the appliance is still covered under the manufactures warranty before you buy it.

Use a Coupon

Coupons are not just for groceries. Take a look to see if you can find a coupon for your local hardware store. Often times you can find a 10% off coupon on any item up to $1000. These coupons are great for appliance purchases because most appliances cost under the maximum amount but are still quite expensive. So if you were to use that coupon on a $900 refrigerator you would save $90 just like that. Combine that with a scratch and dent model and the savings can be incredible.

Downgrade

Finally, look to downgrade slightly from what you were originally look to buy. So if you wanted stainless steel appliances, why not get them in satina instead because it gives the same look but costs less. Or ask yourself if you really need that cook top range or if the less expensive coils would work well for you. Though there are things we all want in our appliances, see what you really need and then find compromises to lower the price. So when you need to purchase an appliance for your home, take these money saving tips into consideration. Start by trying to find it free or used but if that does not work look for a floor model that you can use a coupon on. The bottom line is there is no reason to pay full price on your next appliance. Do some smart shopping and you will find yourself saving hundreds of dollars.
