How to Save Money on Your Landscaping Project

Let's face it. Everyone would like to have a beautifully landscaped yard. However, the cost of having one can be astronomical if not done correctly. A major factor in having your "dream outdoors" is the budget. The following will help you to stretch your dollars and leaving you with a beautiful yard.

The first thing you want to do is to form a plan. By having a well-thought out design in place, you can save a lot of time and money, as well as stress. Once you have your design, you need to decide whether you are going to do the work yourself or enlist the aid of a contractor. There are pros and cons of each. While you can save a lot of money doing things yourself, if not done correctly, you not only can waste time, but money, as well.

If using a contractor, you need to get bids from at least three contractors. Make sure you get an itemized estimate from each one, as well as a written guarantee of their work. When you have the estimates in hand, compare prices and how long it will take them to complete the project.

Another way to save is to use as much as you can from the already existing landscape. Before you dig up or tear down anything, first decide if you can fit it into your design. When tearing things up, such as an old brick walkway, think of how you might be able to use the old bricks in your new design.

In the long run, if you thoroughly prepare the soil, you will save a lot of money. Work in organic matter, such as rotted manure, compost, and shredded leaves. This can save you from replacing dying plants and shrubs due to bad soil conditions.

Consider putting down grass seed instead of sod. While sod will give you an instant lawn, grass seed will germinate and grow quite easily. This is one of the major things you can save a lot of money on.

If doing a lot of the work yourself, rent or borrow the expensive tools and equipment needed to complete your project. There are many such places available to rent rototillers, power washers, and even backhoes.

The final tip on saving money is to take advantage of your landscaping and plant the fruits, vegetables, and herbs that your family loves. Not only will you have fun while gardening, you'll also be saving money on your grocery bill.
