How to Save Money on Light Fixtures

Catherine Woods
If you need new lighting fixtures, you have probably been surprised at how much just one fixture can cost. A simple chandelier for over the dining room table will cost you at least $100 from a lighting specialty store. So how can you save money on light fixtures for your home? Simple! Just use these money saving tips.

Habitat for Humanity

The Habitat Restores are great places to find donated home improvement items like lighting at a very large discount. Since people have donated the items to the store, the prices are going to be much lower than if you had gone to a large chain. The only downfall is that the selection can be very small. So if you are looking for a very particular look, you are not likely to find it here.

Surplus Stores

Check to see if you have a home improvement surplus store in your area. These stores buy extra stock from larger chains for a very low price, so they can sell the same items for much less. However, as with the Habitat stores, the selection is going to be much smaller than you would find at a regular retailer. Nevertheless, if you are patient and check back often, you just may find what you are looking for.

Clearance

Not finding what you are looking for? Then head to the clearance section at your big box home improvement store. These sections are filled with brand new merchandise that is no longer being produced. This does not mean, however, that you are going to find outdated fixtures. Typically, these lighting fixtures are still in style but have had a slight change made to them. So take a look at this section filled with money saving lighting options.

Coupons

If you do find yourself purchasing from a store like Home Depot or Lowe's, be sure to use a coupon to save some money. These retailers almost always have coupons out for $10 off a $50 purchase or 10% off your entire purchase. Find the coupons that will save you the most money to use on your new fixture. It is a quick and easy way to get the exact fixture you want for less. So do not leave your coupons at home.

Ask for a Discount

Are you planning on replacing a large number of fixtures for your home? Then make sure you ask for a discount. Let the retailer know that you will be ordering a large quantity of fixtures and ask if they could give you a break for buying all of your fixtures with them. Typically the retailer will jump at the chance to land a large sale and give you a break. However, if they do not, leave the store and find a retailer who will. It is your money, so spend it in a place that will value it.If you use these tips you will find yourself saving a good deal of money on your lighting fixtures. Try to be patient, a great deal is almost always just around the corner. Before you know it you will be enjoying your beautiful new light fixtures in your home. So start shopping.
