How to Save Money on Milk

Catherine Woods
Most people love a fresh glass of milk. However, when you are working with a tight budget, buying milk can be a real budget buster. With a gallon of milk going for over $3 in most places, it is important to know how to save money on this expensive grocery item. Here are a few tips you can use to save money on your milk purchases.

Freeze it

Most people do not realize that milk can actually be frozen. This can be a great money saver because it allows you to stock up on milk when it is on sale or when you have a coupon. There is no real worry of it going bad, because milk will stay good for at least 2 months when it is frozen. When you realize that you are running low on milk, just pull a new gallon out of the freezer and let it thaw in the refrigerator. This will provide you fresh milk all of the time, at the lowest price possible.

Buy 2%

In many places, 2% milk is cheaper than whole milk and fat free milk is cheaper than 2%. So if you are used to drinking whole milk, why not switch to 2% to save money on each gallon you buy. If you are already drinking 2% milk, try fat free milk for even more savings. The difference in taste is not terribly different and you will be avoiding unnecessary fat in your diet.

Try Generic

Isn't it amazing how the same milk can cost so much more because of a label? Name brand milk can cost up to $1 more per gallon than generic milk. Do a price comparison at your local grocery store and see the price difference, you might be shocked. Don't buy into name brand milk when the generic milk tastes the same.

Water it Down

Ok, do not water down your milk when you are going to be drinking it straight. However, if you are going to be using the milk for cooking or in your breakfast cereal, why not try it. A little bit of water added here and there can really help that milk go farther, which will save you money. So give it a try the next time you are cooking and see if you can notice a difference.

Reconstitute it

When prepared correctly, reconstituted dry milk can taste every bit as good as fresh. The key is to prepare the milk the night before and let it refrigerate overnight. However, if you still are not fond of the taste, you can always use reconstituted milk for cooking or milk it in with your fresh milk to help hide the taste. So purchase a small box and see if this inexpensive milk will work for your family.

As you can see, saving money on milk is definitely possible. With a few tricks, you can save a great deal of money on milk for your family. So start buying generic, freezing it and making it. You will soon see the amount you spend on milk drop.
