How to Save Money in the Nursery

Create a Cozy Room for the Newest Member of the Family on the Cheap

My pregnancy wasn't exactly planned, in fact it came as quite a shock. Some of my first concerns were about money, how I would feed the baby much less create a fun and beautiful nursery. I soon figured out that just because the United States is in the midst of a nasty recession that has definitely affected my pocket book, I can still have all the fun with my nursery I'd imagine.

First rule, don't turn away any hand me down

When my grandfather offered up the crib all six of his children slept, making the crib at least 60 years, I had a good idea the crib wouldn't be up today's standards. My grandfather was in the hospital when he offered up the crib and ended up passing away a few weeks later, so I had to keep a hold of the crib until I dealt with all the emotions. My fiance and I were lugging it to the garbage after finding it indeed wasn't safe by current standards when he remarked what a shame it was because the wood was solid and not the particle board stuff used today.

We came up with a plan. We managed to take out two slabs of wood hand painted with puppies that we're going to make into wall hangings by painting our baby's name onto theme. My fiance is going to make the rest of the crib into a toy chest or some sort of chest.

We also got a hold of an old rocking chair that didn't look the prettiest. My fiance sanded it down and then stained it all for about $15 saving use much compared to pricey store items. Our child will also appreciate all the time and energy we put into the rocking chair just for them.

Work local resources

Sometimes, asking for help from can be humiliating. We called a local center called the Hope Center in hopes of taking a few educational classes as we're both first time parents. We learned about a crib club program they have. We earn bonus bucks each week. We never thought of selfs as charity cases. But this way we learn and earn at the same time. Our advocates actually look forward to meeting with us each week because we're so devoted to being good parents.

Deals can also be had from local thrift stores. Learn when these stores have sale items and become friends with the clerks so they can help you look for new or gently used items.
