The way your payments are set up is that almost all your payments up until the "halfway" point, say if you took out a loan and had 30 years to pay it off, up until year 15 most of the money you pay goes completely to interest, or the money the bank is making off of you by loaning you the money. And finally in next 15 years you are actually decreasing your principle more than your interest, which is the actual amount you borrowed from the bank.
However one little trick that saves people alot of money in the long run is simply this. DON'T MAKE A MINIMUM PAYMENT! Every bit of money you pay over the minimum payment each month goes directly to principle. Therefore if you consistantly pay more than required every month you are going to be paying less interest in the long run since the interest is based upon a percentage of what you still owe.
If you consistantly pay extra every month you are saving money in the long run while the bank is making less money off your loan. Sure it might be hard to come up with that extra bit of cash, but if will save you thousands of dollars in the long run if you make it a habit.
