How to Save Money when Shopping for Back-To-School

Five Money Lessons that Will Benefit You

Freida Thomas
It's back- to- school time and inevitably shopping for supplies and clothes are on your agenda. Don't break the bank while doing so by incorporating the following suggestions into your shopping plans.

1. Plan a back-to-school budget with your kids before you head out to stores. Set an amount that you're willing to spend per child and make sure they understand that goal. Speak to them about separating their needs from their wants. Make a shopping list of what is needed and plan to stick to it. Also make it a goal to find bargains and not to pay full price for any of the items on your list.

2. Spend within your budget. You can save money by planning to shop on tax free weekends offered by many States in August. To see if your State offers a tax free weekend, items included, and the dates, click here. Start a few weeks before your shopping trip to look at sales papers, clip coupons and plan which stores will save you the most money. Don't leave out visiting consignment shops. You can find nice clothing at a fraction of the cost you will pay in a department store.

3. Know what you already have to avoid buying duplicate items. Take an inventory of each child's closet to determine what still fits and what doesn't. Place unwanted clothing in a box to donate to Goodwill. Do the same with school supplies. Add to your shopping list items of clothing, shoes, school supplies, etc. that you do not already have and will need to start the school year.

4. Comparing prices online is a good way to use to teach kids the value in comparing to get the best deals. Websites like www.pricegrabber.com and www.dealtime.com .

5. The lesson of being charitable can be introduced to kids during the back-to-school shopping process. The clothing and other items you inventoried before shopping should be taken to goodwill. Take the kids with you and let them see how the donation process works. When you get the receipt for a tax deduction, explain what it is for and why. Make this a life lesson for your child.

These 5 approaches to spending, whether it is for back-to-school or any purpose, will be beneficial in developing better spending habits, therefore saving you more money.
