How to Save Money Shopping This Christmas

Take Advantage of Circuit City Going out of Business

Authorities say this Christmas, 2008, is probably one of the worst financial times our nation has seen since the Great Depression in 1929. People are reluctant to buy merchandise as they aren't sure of the financial future of the country or their own household. Although we are blessed in my family with both adults working, we too are a bit scared by the money situation. I have decided to shop wisely this year for Christmas, and have initiated a few simple tips, which are already saving me money on Christmas presents. Some of those ideas follow.

1) I usually venture out to buy presents knowing who I need to buy for, but not really having a list. I end up impulse buying, thinking how nice the pair of shoes would be to go with the outfit. This year, I made a specific list for each person, with what I was wanting to buy. I am determined there will be no impulse buying this year. I am glad to report, so far it is working.

2) Last Christmas, as with many holidays in the past, I have ended up by January 1st with several large credit card bills. I spend the entire year paying them off. This year, it is cash only, or debit ATM. Once I run out of cash, the shopping trip is over.

3) A lot of people forget to comparative shop. Just because the Wii system you want is on sale at one store, that doesn't mean it is the best price. Resist the urge to buy it, and call several stores, comparing the prices before you buy. Some stores will even honor the lowest competitors price that you can find on the merchandise.

4) Shop at stores that are going out of business. Be careful though, as sometimes you aren't really getting that big of a buy. Circuit City is closing it's doors, as are many Macy's stores, in addition to Dillard's Department stores. Many of these stores have sales on merchandise. But check on the return policy. That Wii system may come with a no return policy as the store will be out of business soon.

5) Shop at discount stores, such as JC Penny's outlet stores or Sears Outlet stores. Some malls carry these off shots of the major stores. They basically sell out of demand items, out of season, or slightly damaged items. You an purchase some amazing deals at these stores. The only downfall is they usually don't accept returns. I have shopped at the JC Penny's outlet store in the Jacksonville, Florida Regency Square Mall , and they do not accept returns.

Hopefully, some of these tips will help you to have a wiser shopping experience this year. Who says economic times are all bad? People are beginning to think before they buy, and make wiser choices about their purchases.

Very good ideas! It's hard not to impulse buy while Christmas shopping. :-)
