Switch to Generic Products
Generic products work as well, and sometimes even work better than brand names. There are some exceptions to that rule - but those are few and far between. By buying generic products you will be able to save a large portion of money in your budget because you are saving dollars (in most cases) and not just a few pennies. In regards to generic over the counter medications, despite some arguments they are not the same as brand names - they actually are exactly the same. If you don't believe that compare the ingredients and you will see that they are identical. And by switching to generic over the counter medications, you can save even more money. If you still have doubts that generics will work for you then talk to the pharmacist or your physician.
Cut out the Restaurants and Take-out Meals
A typical fast food meal is going to cost at least $5 per person, and many times it will cost more than that - especially if you are in a restaurant and add on a tip to the meal as well. Compared to a meals prepared at home you can make that $5 meal last the day, give or take a few dollars. So if you eat out even once a day that is $150 a month on meals in addition to what you are preparing at home. This makes your average spending on meals by eating out and eating at home around $300 a month. By cutting out restaurants and take-out meals, you will end up cutting your food bill in half.
Clip Coupons
Coupons are not just in the Sunday paper anymore - they are everywhere online. If you are really set on buying a brand name product, look online first. Most manufacturers offer coupons you can print out and use in store, which can save you a few dollars both on the product and on buying the paper. Also, there are sites that will notify you when products you regularly use post coupons on the internet. So do some surfing and save some money!
Take Advantage of Online Freebies
Like coupons, freebies are everywhere online - and most of the time that freebie will come with a coupon in the mail. Just do some surfing, and let the internet save you some money!
Bargain with Businesses
Right now you are going to find more discounts and bargains than ever with companies you are dealing with. Most have discounts that are unadvertised, and therefore go unnoticed. For example, I wasn't using all the minutes on my phone so I called to see if there was a smaller plan available. After spending 20 minutes on the phone I was able to cut my bill in half and save $30 a month. So take a proactive stance in regards to your bills, see what discounts are available and shop around!
Weigh Fixing vs. Replacing
When something breaks in the home the best option may not be to replace it - especially when it comes to more expensive items and appliances. Once an item does break talk to friends, call repair places, and talk with the manufacturer. You may be able to repair the item for less than the cost of replacement, or the manufacturer may send you a replacement component for free. It never hurts to ask around, and you may be able to save money in the end. If you do need to replace the item do some serious shopping around - both in the store and on the Internet.
Buy Only Sale Items
There is almost no reason as to why you would need to pay full price for an item. Save money by buying only sale and discount items, use sale coupons, and if you can not find a discount in store check online. Auction sites are great places to find discounts - especially if you are willing to buy gently used or refurbished items.
Sort and Sell
Make a bit of extra income for yourself and add a few dollars to a tight budget by cleaning your closet and getting rid of items you don't use. Follow the cardinal cleaning rule - if you haven't used or touched it in 6 months it is time to be sold. Once you have your unused items collected look into selling them at consignment stores, community garage sales, and online auction sites such as Ebay.
Pay in Cash
Before you go shopping determine how much you can afford to spend, and then go to the ATM and take out the cash you need - and only spend that cash. You will physically see where your money is going, and be more careful when you spend it. This will also keep you from overspending on items. Also, when you are buying larger items such as furniture, you may get a discount because you are paying in cash rather than using your debit card.
Weigh Wants vs. Needs
Do you really need what you are about to buy? Do you really need it? A lot of extra spending results in buying items you want rather than need. That is not to say never buy what you want - just make conscientious decisions when you spend. And if it is something you want and don't need, and it will stretch or break the budget don't buy it until you can afford it.
