Tip #1: Don't just shop with a list...use it. A list will keep you focused and on track. A list doesn't just remind you of what you need to purchase, it also reminds you of what you don't need.
Tip #2: Look past the illusions. The biggest package isn't always the most wise buying decision. Many phones now come with calculators on them. Carry your cell phone with you to use the calculator function while you shop. You can determine what products are the best deals by dividing volume by cost. The lowest number on the calculator is the most cost effective product by volume.
Tip #3: Don't be afraid to experiment with off brand and generic products. Just because you've never heard of a company it doesn't mean that they don't produce good food. Chances are that there are people out there who have never heard of the brands you eat either, and that doesn't seem to stop you from buying them, does it? Buy a couple of new brands here and there, depending on which ones are on sale. As you determine which brands you can tolerate, you will expand your options for comparison shopping.
Tip #4: Don't shop hungry. When you shop hungry, more things look appetizing than not.
Tip #5: Only buy what you can carry. Leave the baskets and carts by the door and only shop until you can't carry anything else. You'll save hundreds.
Tip #6: Shop alone. Kids, friends, spouses, etc. have a way of filling up the basket when you're not looking or finding a way to convince you to buy something that you know they don't need.
Tip #7: Walk, don't drive. Without the luxury of trunk space, you'll be forced not to buy more than you can carry.
Tip #8: This tip has been around for a while and it still rings true. Always check the bottom of store shelves for the best deals. This is also going to be where the generic brands are, too.
Tip #9: Clip every coupon you can get your hands on. Combine coupons with walking trips to the supermarket for even more savings.
Tip #10: Join the club! Store rewards programs are some of the best ways to save cash at the checkout counter. Passing up the chance to join a free rewards program is just plain silly. Some stores even offer cash rewards for club members. Even if you're not a member, many stores will let you grab an application, agree to bring it back later, and still reap the rewards of a club membership for your immediate purchase.

Post a CommentThese are good tips, C.J. At one of our local supermarkets, they don't have any baskets, just trolleys. It's such a devious marketing ploy. I wish they would have baskets! They know that by only making trolleys available, customers are more likely to shop for more.
