We are a society of communicators. We need and want to remain connected to one another at all costs and sometimes these costs can be quite large. In order to communicate to our hearts content and keep costs low there are a few things one can do to lessen the impact of cost when it comes to telephone usage.

Bundle your phone, Internet and/or cable service:

Some areas of the country have realized that phone, Internet and cable combination services are not only convenient but good for business. And with this realization companies have begun to offer bargain prices when users combine their services. This can save money in a variety of ways. Not only does it lessen the costs per month on the services combined but it also saves on paper waste and postage. For when you think about it, receiving and sending only one bill a month instead of three saves costs for both the consumer and the company, savings which are passed back to the consumer with perks from the company for the loyalty of the customer.

Eliminate your landline:

In this day and age of cell phones, everyone seems to own one. From Grandma to students and even elementary aged kids, most families own at least 2 cell phones and use them for 90% of their needs. When you eliminate the landline and make sure your cell phone is on 24/7, the savings to your family can be phenomenal. Add to that the fact that most cell phone plans offer free long distance and calling after 7 pm and on weekends, the savings continue to add up and can make a noticeable difference in a short period of time. True, it takes some getting used to not to reach for that landline phone to make a call but in the short period of transition time it takes, you will most likely save the cost of a dinner for the entire family. Added to that, family plans that many cell phone companies offer and your savings per year can really make a difference in your overall costs. Several families I know have eliminated their local phone service in exchange for all cellular service, As one pays a set amount each month for cell service but is unsure what long distance charges (on a home phone) might add up to be, it is only smart to drop that land line and get cell phones for the family, And if you really want to be ready for an emergency, purchase and activate several of those disposable phones and make sure each child has one, If they are lost the payment to replace it will be a lot less that of a regular phone,

Sign up for unlimited long distance services:

If you are so used to a landline that you are hesitant to drop it in exchange for cell phone usage, you can still save money with your landline. Check into plans that allow you unlimited long distance for a fixed price. With these plans you can usually call at any time of the day or night and all calls will be included in the plan. Some plans even include international calling if you so designate but will obviously higher in price. Check with your phone company for availability in your area. If you are a frequent long distance user, this plan can be a life saver in terms of savings to your family.

Shop around for the best deal.

Sounds like a no-brainer doesn't it? Well, many homeowners fall into the trap of "I've always used this company and always will", not realizing that said company can in fact cost them a lot more in the long run than an alternate company. With the option of keeping your existing phone number at little or no cost, changing companies for the best deal is both easy and practical. And if you are set on staying with your preexisting company, check to see if there are package deals which may benefit you without changing. Sometimes merely suggesting you are shopping around for a better deal will cause your existing carrier to offer you a much better deal than you previously had in the past. One site to check for savings on phone companies is saveonphone.com which is a great resource in terms of checking to see what the best deal is for your area.

Simply said, there are many ways you can save on your landline phone service in addition to calling at off peak times and on weekends. Though we all realize that calling in the late evening and on weekends will save money, many do not use all the resources available to them in order to save on their communication needs. Using but one of the above mentioned suggestions can produce a nice amount of savings and added to savings in other areas of your life, can make the difference when it comes to living comfortably and simply living paycheck to paycheck.
