How to Save when Money is Tight

Tony Miri
More bills came in the mail today. The cost of living is going up, but the size of your paychecks isn't. It seems impossible to get by. Well, I have good news; it isn't. Here are some useful tips to help you save money when you need it most.

Cancel Everything

I never said saving money was going to be fun. If you are paying out your entire paychecks to various bills, you need to eliminate some bills. In fact, you need to eliminate everything that you don't need. Cancel your cable TV. Cancel your internet. Cancel either your cell phone or your house phone. If you don't cancel your cell phone, downgrade to a lower plan. Just with these changes alone you will notice a huge amount of money saved at the end of every month. TV is a big one, because nobody needs cable TV. There are plenty of ways to stay entertained without the TV. Go hiking or just for a walk. Watch birds and sketch them. Go to your local library and get some books, and if you are lucky, your library probably has free internet access that you can use. Don't make excuses! If you really need to save money, you really need to make sacrifices.

Set a Goal

It is a lot easier to save money with a goal. Another little hint, make it a big goal. If you don't have a reason to save money, you wont. It is too easy to spend money on stuff that you don't need without a goal. Your goal can be anything. Maybe you want to save up to buy a new car or motorcycle. Maybe you want to get a dog. Maybe there is nothing you want to buy. In that case, there are still good goals you can set. Make a goal to be able to pay all of your monthly bills for a month using only the money you have saved. That way you can save all of the money you make from your job for that whole month. There is always some kind of goal you can set.

Be Cheap

It's not easy to be cheap. It seems like everybody else is having fun while you are stuck at home with nothing to do. I know that my friends often give me a hard time about it, but when I remind them of my situation, they always understand. When they call me up and want to go out to eat, I often have to say, "Sorry, I just can't afford it right now." You don't have to be a complete shut in though. Evaluate your budget and make a monthly allowance for entertainment. Just don't make it too big or you will cancel out all of your savings. Just don't buy anything you don't need. Period.

Bargain Hunt

When you do have to buy something, go for the cheaper option whenever possible. Buy off brand foods. Most of the time the off brand food is the same product in a different package. Don't buy fast food. If you have to, try and shop from the cheaper menus that most fast food places have. Also, drink water, and no, not bottled water. Not only will you be healthier, water is usually free.

If you are buying new clothes, first ask yourself if you really need new clothes, then go to stores that sell them cheap. It is getting hard to find cheap clothes these days, but don't be afraid to look at clearance racks. There are always great bargains to be had. It may just take a little extra effort to find them.

Basically, saving is not fun, but it does not have to be miserable either. Give up some brand names and get down to your needs. Set a goal and really make sacrifices to achieve it. Before long those balances will be dropping and your life can return back to normal.
