1. Walt Disney World offers a wide variety of accommodations, all of which feature Disney's exceptional service. The most upscale of these is the fabulous Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. As magnificent as the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa may be, a stay there can cost you an arm and a leg, so save the Grand Floridian for a year when you are not attempting to save money at Walt Disney World. Instead, select one of Walt Disney World's "Value Resorts," which start at a mere $82 per night. The most colorful of these is Disney's Pop Culture Resort, which celebrates pop culture of the Twentieth Century. Other Value Resorts in Walt Disney World include Disney's All Star Movies Resort, Disney's All Star Sports Resort, and Disney's All Star Music Resort. These hotels are more affordable, yet they still offer "all the benefits, service and magic you would expect from Disney." And, of course, during your stay at one of these economical resorts, you can visit the other resorts - the Grand Floridian, the Contemporary, the Polynesian, the Animal Kingdom Lodge - as often as you'd like.
2. Walt Disney World also offers a wide selection of dining opportunities. If you are looking to save money at Walt Disney World, rather than electing to dine at one of their world-class restaurants, make a decision to dine at the parks. The Magic Kingdom, EPCOT Center, MGM Studios, and the Animal Kingdom all offer inexpensive dining opportunities. Burgers, hot dogs, chicken, and fries are available at counter-service restaurants like Cosmic Ray's in the Magic Kingdom. If you want to enjoy a moderately-priced sit down meal, check out Ohana at the Polynesian Resort. Even if you select a sit-down dinner, make a decision to stay away from alcohol during your stay. Cocktails can sometimes double or even triple your bill.
3. Don't rent a car during your stay at Walt Disney World. You really don't need one. Take advantage of Walt Disney World's free transportation for its guests. Ride the Monorail between parks. Take the Disney Bus to and from your hotel. The money you save on a car rental is money you can put toward something far more rewarding or essential.
4. Travel during the low season, when there are less people, and therefore fewer lines. If you can ride all your favorite rides without spending hours on each line, you can reduce the length of your stay, and thereby reduce your hotel and food bills. Plan a trip for October or November. Or February or March. Stay away from Walt Disney World when children are off from school, especially in the summer and during the holidays. If you are bringing school-age children, pull them out for a week. Don't worry; they'll catch up.
5. Make a decision not to purchase any souvenirs. That's right. No trading pins, no Mickey ears, no board games, no Pirate gear, no Goofy hats, no Disney pens, no stuffed animals, no pewter spoons, nothing, nada, zilch. Most of the souvenirs you purchase at Walt Disney World can purchased back home at your local Disney Store or online anyway. And usually for less money. Explain this to your children. They will understand.
6. Don't leave Walt Disney World during your stay. If you really need to save money on your Disney World vacation, save other Orlando-area attractions for another visit. Make a decision not to head out to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. Save Shamoo and Sea World for another time.
Some of these tips may sound a bit harsh, but they can cut your Walt Disney World budget in half. And if that's what it takes to get you to the most magical place on earth, then so be it.
